Course Description
A survey of the background and rise of English Baptists, including their progress from the seventeenth century in England until the present day. Includes a survey of the rise of Baptists in America in the seventeenth century and their progress to the present. Includes various Baptist groups, large and small, of differing theological persuasions, denominational and independent. (Formerly CHHI 694)

Rationale
Baptist history is essential for anyone who believes in Religious Liberty. The entire dissenter and Free Church movements, of which Baptists are an integral part, are built upon the local church and soul autonomy, as well as the freedom of the local church from any external forces or compulsion. Furthermore, the history of Baptists is a history of the Believer’s church, in that entrance into the local fellowship was predicated upon a confession of Christ as personal Savior. Finally, the history of Baptists is a vivid and moving narrative of the broad shoulders on which we stand. Death, fire, persecution, storm, edict, and regents could not stop the work of those who committed themselves to the core principles which serve as the foundation of this course. Very few movements have been as saturated in blood, toil, sweat, and tears.
Measurable Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Analyze the origin(s) and development of the Baptists.
- Evaluate the distinctive beliefs and practices of the Baptists as they have been embodied in the past.
- Construct an account of the important persons and/or events which have contributed to Baptist work and progress.
- Value the influence and importance of Baptist history in the life of the student.
- Evaluate the different views and bodies which have arisen among Baptists in the past and present to determine their faithfulness to Baptist principles.

There will be 2 Article Critiques throughout this course. The student will complete a 2–3-page article critique on the provided articles. Each assignment will offer a summary of the article and provide a critique of the article. (MLOs: B, D)
Research Paper: Topic Assignment
The student is to research a Baptist figure (person) or event (such as the Separatist Movement in England), that is directly related to Baptist history. For this assignment, the student is to select the topic he/she is going to complete the research paper on and also provide 10 sources in a current Turabian-style bibliography. Additionally, the student must provide a working thesis and initial conclusions drawn from the research. (MLOs: A, C, E)
Research Paper: Final Submission Assignment
The student is to research a Baptist figure (person) or event (such as the Separatist Movement in England), that is directly related to Baptist history. The student will write a 12–15-page paper on the research with at least 10 sources. The paper must adhere to current Turabian formatting. (MLOs: A, C, E)

The student will complete 3 essay quizzes for this course. Each quiz will be made up of 4 essay questions that must be answered with at least 300 words for each question. The student will have 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete the quiz. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes. (MLOs: A, B, C, D, E)
