This course provides strategies that will enable students to apply college learning skills to their current courses. It incorporates one-on-one mentoring, as well as weekly accountability. It is designed to foster an awareness of current academic progress and to encourage the motivation and responsibility necessary for academic success. (Cross-listed with ASCS 105)

Some students need additional instruction in transitioning from the acquisition of study skills to the application of these skills in their coursework. This instruction will equip the student with the skills needed to achieve greater academic success.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

    1. Design a personalized study plan to implement weekly.
    2. Demonstrate specific study skills by completing application-based assignments.
    3. Display an understanding of the relationship between his or her academic standing, goals, and career aspirations.
    4. Discuss approaches to personal study skills as guided by the biblical/Christian worldview.

Course Requirements Checklist

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1.

Discussion Board Forums (3)

Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will create a thread in response to the provided promptly for each forum. Each thread must be at least 150 words (and 3 paragraphs) and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student will reply to the threads of at least 2 classmates. Each reply must be at least 50 words (and 1 paragraph).

Master Calendar

The student will create a Master Calendar that contains what assignments (including tests, quizzes, papers, etc.) are due for the next 8 modules/weeks of all courses on his or her current academic schedule.

Individual Conference

The student will sign up for, “attend,” and summarize an appointment to meet with the instructor by phone. The purpose of the Individual Conference is for the student to discuss all his or her current coursework with the instructor to identify good practices and areas for improvement. Using the provided templates, the student will submit his or her completed Master Calendar and Current Grades documents at least 2 days before the appointment and during the module/week in which it is scheduled.

Part 1 – Sign-Up

The student will sign up to meet by telephone with the instructor for an Individual Phone Conference at a later time in the course. The student will submit confirmation of the scheduled day and time for this Individual Phone Conference.

Part 2 – Individual Phone Conference

The student will submit specific information before meeting for the Individual Phone Conference and must be prepared to answer questions related to past, present, and future coursework.

Part 3 – Summary

The student will submit a short reflection summarizing the Individual Conference.

Introduction Survey

The student will respond to a set of 5 questions that center around his or her student status, study habits, weekly activities, and motivation for continuing education.

Study Logs (6)

The student will outline steps for the successful completion of assignments from all courses on his or her current academic schedule. Each Study Log will include due dates, a detailed plan to complete each assignment, whether the goals were accomplished, and all grades for previous assignments.

Self-Assessments (6)

Each Self-Assessment will contain 2–3 multiple-choice questions that are based on the presentation(s) for the assigned module/week and 2 short-answer questions (these must be answered in sentence form) to provide accountability and reflection on course content. Each will be open notes and have a 1-hour time limit.

Course-Reflection Survey

The student will respond to a set of 5 questions that reflect on the past 7 modules/weeks of the course. The student will assess his or her Study Logs, typical study habits, management of weekly activities, and ability to stay motivated.
