Course Description

A documentation course on the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully format a research paper and document primary and secondary sources as required in a discipline.

Rationale

While this course does not fit into any degree program, it does provide valuable support for all majors. In this course, the student will be taught the reasons for the four main documentation formats (MLA, APA, Chicago/Turabian, and CSE), as well as the proper use of the one that is designated for his or her major.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Determine the proper documentation formats for specific disciplines.
  2. Summarize, paraphrase, quote, and cite the sources correctly.
  3. Identify plagiarism and apply the necessary documentation to correct it.
  4. Apply the necessary steps to conduct effective research and evaluate sources and document them correctly.
  5. Integrate sources accurately and effectively using a specific document format.
  6. Write with clarity.
  7. Recognize standard usage in English grammar, word choice (diction), phraseology, and sentence structure.
  8. Apply knowledge of sentence structure to basic sentence editing and revision.

Course Assignment

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

The student will completely locate and evaluate 3 sources to determine if they are scholarly, why they are scholarly, and how they will be useful for the Research Essay

Integrating Sources Assignment

The student will practice integrating source material in academic writing. The student will use provided source material to create a direct quotation, a summary, a paraphrase, and a reference/works cited entry.

The student will complete an annotated bibliography in the proper writing style that contains at least 3 scholarly references. A summary of at least 300 words for each reference will also be required.

The student will write a 3–4-page research-based essay in current APA, MLA, CMS/Turabian, or CSE format. The rough draft must include at least 3 scholarly references.

Based on feedback from peers and the course instructor, the student will make corrections to his or her draft and submit the final 3–4-page research-based essay in current APA, MLA, CMS, or CSE. The paper must include at least 3 scholarly references.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. The student will reflect on what the student has learned in this course over the past eight weeks. The student’s initial thread will be at least 300 words with at least one source with appropriate documentation. The student will respond to at least one classmate with at least 50 words.

Each quiz (Quiz: Academic Writing, Quiz: Avoiding Plagiarism, Quiz: Evaluating Sources, Quiz: Summarizing and Paraphrasing, and Quiz: Documentation) will cover the Learn material for the module in which it is assigned. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain multiple-choice and true/false questions, and have a 1-hour time limit.
