HIUS 316 connects the experience of the American Revolution and the American Civil War. The course covers political, constitutional, economic, military, religious, and social aspects of American history between the end of the War of 1812 and the beginning of the Civil War; it thus serves as a bridge in the student’s understanding of these two critical events.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify major figures and events in Jacksonian America (1815 through 1848).
  2. Explain how political, constitutional, economic, military, diplomatic, religious, and cultural factors influenced the course of national history during Jacksonian America (1815 through 1848).
  3. Demonstrate college-level competencies in reading comprehension, documentary analysis, research, and historical writing on the Jacksonian America period (1815 through 1848).
  4. Evaluate interpretative and historiographical approaches to Jacksonian America (1815 through 1848).
  5. Apply biblical principles to the problems and issues of the Jacksonian American period (1815 through 1848).

The student will write a research-based paper in the current Turabian format which explores the developments in a specific region during the Jacksonian Era and relates this region to a specific course theme.

Your Home in History: Topic Proposal Assignment

  • The student will identify a region to research for the project, preferably one with a personal connection to the student. They should also choose a one-course theme (provided in the instructions) to explore the history of the region. The proposal should include three scholarly sources that could assist in understanding the developments within the region during the period.

Your Home in History: Primary Source Reflection Assignment

  • The student will provide two primary sources in Turabian format that relates to either the region or course theme chosen for the project. For each source, the student will write a three-paragraph reflection in response to the prompts in the provided template.

Your Home in History: Final Paper Assignment

  • The final research paper must be 6–8 pages and must contain 10 references in addition to the course materials and the Bible. The paper must be in the current Turabian format. Two of the eight sources must be primary sources. The paper must address the Jacksonian Era history of the chosen region and demonstrate how the one-course theme manifested here in specific ways.
