This course examines modern religious movements, with a focus on the major world religions. Particular attention is given to the historical development, beliefs, and practices of the major world religions as well as a comparative analysis of various religious beliefs.

Rationale

In this global age, students will encounter adherents of other religious movements. This course is designed to inform the students of the beliefs of these religions and to equip them to respond as followers of Jesus Christ.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the historical/geographical development of major world religions.
  2. Explain the beliefs of these religious movements.
  3. Compare the beliefs of these religious movements.
  4. Evaluate the beliefs of each religion by the Scriptures.
  5. Develop a presentation of the gospel of Jesus Christ for an adherent of one of these religions, while incorporating at least one belief of the religion to help the adherent understand the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Discussions (4)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the selected prompt. The thread must be between 250 – 500 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. Claims in the thread must be well-supported with material from the Wilson textbook and the Scriptures, in the current Turabian format. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to two (2) other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be between 150 – 300 words. (MLOs: B, C, D)

Gospel Communication Project Assignments (4)

The student will develop a gospel response for a follower of another religion by completing a series of four (4) assignments. First, the student will propose five to ten (5 – 10) open-ended questions to be used when he/she interviews a follower of a global religion other than Christianity. Second, the student will submit a bibliography of at least five (5) outside scholarly sources and the two (2) textbooks that he/she plans to use in the response. Third, the student will interview a follower of a global religion other than Christianity, and report on the interview in a 5-to-7-page paper. Fourth, the student will compose a gospel response to the person the student interviewed with a 10-to-12-page paper. (MLOs: A, B, C, D, E)

Each quiz will cover the Reading & Study material assigned up to and for the module: week in which it is assigned. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 50 multiple-choice questions, and have a 1 hour and 15 minutes time limit. The student will have the option to take each quiz twice; if the quiz is attempted a second time, only the second quiz score will be recorded. (MLOs: A, B, C)
