Course Description

A residency whereby the student is assigned to a ministry outreach setting to receive hands-on experience and guidance in the day-to-day functions of sports outreach.

Rationale

This course is designed to provide direct experience under the mentorship of a qualified professional. The internship is built on the educational principles of instruction, application, and evaluation by placing the student in a supervised period of learning in the context of actual ministry. This practical experience may be completed with an interscholastic athletic team, a church, a parachurch sports ministry, or a mission agency.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Define mentoring in different contexts.
  2. Discuss experiences of the mentoring process.
  3. Summarize core principles of mentoring.
  4. Provide coaching and evaluation of other students as he/she reflects on his/her ministry experiences.
  5. Design a mentoring program that best suits the needs of the student’s sport and ministry.
  6. Describe the evolution of mentoring in sports.

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

Quiz: Mentorship Site Agreement

The student must complete 8 hours of supervised mentorship experience. This quiz has students confirm their student’s understanding of the mentorship and their responsibility to secure a location by the end of Module 2: Week 2.

Discussions (3)

The student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each topic/discussion. Each thread must be at least 400 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 250 words.

Mentorship Agreement Form Assignment

The Mentorship Agreement Form must be completed by the student, signed by the mentor, and submitted before the start of the mentorship experience. This form is a contract between the student and the mentorship site. The student will not be allowed to begin the mentorship until the agreement is signed by both the mentor and the student.

Weekly Log Sheet Assignment (7)

The student must complete 8 hours of supervised mentorship experience. A weekly log will be completed by the student to document their activities and responsibilities throughout the mentorship.

Mentor Leader Summary (7)

Based on assigned readings, the student will write a summary of each chapter that integrates a Biblical worldview. Each summary must integrate a Biblical worldview, be 1-2 pages, and conform to current APA standards.

Midterm Evaluation

The student’s supervisor will complete an evaluation of the student’s performance at the halfway point of the term.

Mentorship Portfolio

The student will write a 5-page paper in the current APA format that focuses on the mentorship journey. The Mentorship Portfolio must provide background information on the sports ministry and requires the student to reflect on their overall experience. It must include at least 2 references in addition to the course textbook and the Bible.

Final Evaluation

The student’s supervisor will complete an evaluation of the student’s performance at the end of the term.
