Course Description
This course will examine the current research related to planning, funding, and operating sporting events and sports/recreation facilities.

Rationale
This is a required course in the core component of the Sport Management Master’s degree program. The course is designed to provide sports managers with the knowledge necessary for planning and operating sports and recreation facilities and events.
Measurable Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the basic issues related to planning facilities, including site selection, design, and the construction process.
- Explain the different forms of public and private funding of sports facilities and the ethical issues involved in utilizing public funds.
- Describe the process involved in event planning and management.
- Explain the event and facility issues pertinent to participants, spectators, and sponsors.
- Describe the operation of venues and events including staffing, box office management, security, concessions, and maintenance.
- Explain the legal issues facing event and facility management including the risk management process.
- Analyze the process of event bidding and venue selection.
Course Assignment
Textbook readings and lecture presentations
Regular readings from the textbooks and/or selected journal articles, as well as viewing of presentations, will be scheduled. Assignments and quizzes will be scheduled related to the readings.

Discussions (2)
There will be two Discussion assignments, one in Module 1: Week 1 and one in Module 4: Week 4. Students are expected to post an initial thread in selected modules related to an article(s) posted in that module. Threads should be no shorter than 500 words and should build upon the information in the articles including reflective statements and specific applications of the concepts in the article(s). In addition, students must make at least one reply to another classmate’s thread of a minimum of 250 words. The purpose of the reply is to advance the discussion begun in the initial thread. Initial threads are due Thursday and replies are due Sunday of the module: week assigned.
Event Bid Assignment
Students will select a city from North America and submit a bid for either a summer or winter Olympic Games following the general guidelines of the IOC for candidate cities. Recent candidate/host cities of Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, and Vancouver may not be selected. Students will prepare a summer or winter Olympic Games bid using the criteria listed in the instructions. The Event Bid Assignment must be presented as a PowerPoint presentation.
Research Paper (2 parts)
Students will be writing a formal research paper on one of the topics covered during the course. The assignment will be submitted in 2 parts. The paper should be a reflection of current issues and academic (peer-reviewed) research regarding that topic.
The Research Paper: Outline & Key Sources Assignment must include no fewer than 5 peer-reviewed sources. Students will submit the Research Paper: Outline & Key Sources Assignment by the end of Module 3: Week 3.
The Research Paper: Final Draft Assignment must be written using APA formatting. Students should utilize no fewer than 5 peer-reviewed sources. The Research Paper: Final Draft Assignment will be submitted as a Microsoft Word document by the end of Module 7: Week 7.
Quizzes (4)
There are four quizzes in this course, they are found in Module: Weeks 2, 4, 6, and 8. Each quiz will be open book/open notes and will be composed of multiple choice, true/false, and essay questions. You will have 90 minutes to complete each quiz. Each quiz must be completed by the end of the module: week assigned.
