Course Description

This advanced publication design class builds upon layout design, typography, and visual communication concepts learned in previous classes and explores current technologies used in the creation of digital and interactive publications. Lecture and studio work will cover the software and tools necessary for the creation and publishing of an interactive publication across a variety of devices. Students will conceptualize and produce their own publication that invites reader participation. May be taken twice for credit.

The world of design is constantly evolving. It is necessary to learn how to visually communicate and produce work for a variety of media. Principles transcend media, but it is essential to know and understand the differences and challenges of these forms in order to communicate effectively. In this course, topics will build upon previous knowledge and will instruct how to construct interactive page layouts for tablets and devices. The student will have the opportunity to conceptualize and produce an interactive and engaging publication such as a children’s book, magazine, annual report, or comic book to solidify the concepts being taught. The projects created in this course are intended for the growth of the graphic design student’s portfolio and should showcase a deep knowledge of design, layout, audience, concept, and visual communication.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify on tests the foundational terminology, concepts, page anatomy, media, and types of publications used in the industry and be able to use this language to converse intelligently with others.
  2. Know software and techniques instrumental in producing a digital publication.
  3. Plan and execute complex multistage projects and demonstrate project management skills.
  4. Develop themes and concepts that satisfy targeted marketing objectives.
  5. Prepare and provide content for interactive digital publication.
  6. Present materials using relevant techniques.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 150 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates threads. Each reply must be at least 100 words.

The student will complete several tutorials that will help them understand the software and workflow necessary for producing a digital publication.

EPUB Proposal Assignment

The student will propose a piece of previously published content within the public domain that will be used to create 10 custom graphical elements.

EPUB Milestones Assignments (5)

The student will provide proof of concepts and progress with each milestone containing newly developed content and artwork for the chosen public domain work.

EPUB Final Assignment

The student will conceptualize and develop the visuals and layout for a digital publication within the public domain. Using the content developed over the term the student will produce a complete EPUB with custom illustrations.
