Course Description
A 16-week course designed to develop dissertation research, analyze research findings, and compile conclusions based on guided research into an approved dissertation prospectus. The outcome of dissertation writing by the conclusion of the course should approximate three chapters of content for the student’s dissertation. Writing progress will develop under the oversight of the student’s dissertation mentor.

Rationale
BIBL 988 is the first course that facilitates dissertation writing for Ph.D. students. It also is the first official course wherein the student develops a working relationship with their faculty mentor. Based on an approved prospectus, the student will write the first three chapters of their Ph.D. dissertation within the BIBL 988 course. The initial stages of dissertation writing are essential for eventual success at the defense level, so intentional and regular supervision and mentoring is a critical components within the first 16 weeks of dissertation development.
Measurable Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Organize a strategy for dissertation writing relevant to the first three chapters of the Ph.D. dissertation.
- Engage in research about the first three chapters of the Ph.D. dissertation, based on an approved Ph.D. prospectus.
- Develop a relationship with a faculty mentor for Ph.D. dissertation research and writing.
- Produce the content of three chapters of dissertation writing.
- Refine the product of the first three chapters of dissertation writing through consultation and revision.
