Course Description

Business research is a systematic inquiry whose objective is to provide information to solve managerial problems. This course is an introduction to how to do business research with an emphasis on applied problem-solving. It has a major focus on problem identification and analysis, problem-solving strategies, and communication skills.

Business research provides the information needed to make sound business decisions. It helps organizations reduce the chance of costly errors in production, human resources, marketing, entering global markets, and strategic planning. The emphasis of this course is on teaching the student to become an effective consumer of business research.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Relate the use of business information for competitive advantage in terms of what constitutes good research conducted in an ethical manner.
  2. Clarify the business research questions through secondary data and exploration.
  3. Differentiate business research designs: qualitative, observation, surveys, and experiments.
  4. Critique the sources and collection of business data, including measurement, measurement scales, questionnaires and instruments, and sampling.
  5. Summarize techniques for analyzing and presenting business data, including data preparation and description, displaying and examining data, and hypothesis testing.

Read & Interact Assignments (16)

Within this course, students will be required to read and interact with the textbook within the third-party platform, SmartBook. Students must complete each reading and item in the textbook in order to earn the points associated with the assigned reading and prior to completing any Homework Assignment.

Quizzes (8)

In each module, the student will complete a 60-minute timed, open book, 25-question true/false or multiple choice reading comprehension quiz to demonstrate course content mastery of the assigned reading.

The student will complete quizzes within the third-party platform, Connect Plus. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes and the grade will transfer to Canvas.

Discussions (4)

The discussions are based on the questions in an assigned case study. The student will post an initial thread of between 800-1000 words, incorporate at least 5 scholarly (peer-reviewed) articles (at least 1 per question), 1 biblical application/integration, and demonstrate course-related knowledge. Citations and references must follow the current APA style.

In addition, each student will respond to at least two classmates with 450–600 words, incorporate at least 2 scholarly (peer-reviewed) articles, 1 biblical application/integration, and include substantive analysis and insights. Citations and references must follow the current APA style.

Case Study Assignments (3)

The student will write Case Study Assignments based on the case studies provided. Each Case Study Assignment must be at least 900 words and follow the current APA style. The Case Study Assignments must answer the assigned questions. The student must incorporate 4 scholarly (peer-reviewed) research articles in each case study submission.

Research Proposal: Topic Assignment

The major course writing assignment is a Research proposal.  In preparation for that assignment, the student will identify their topic, craft a problem statement, identify 10 scholarly (peer-reviewed) articles to support their topic and create an annotated bibliography. The paper must follow the current APA style.

Research Proposal: Final Assignment

The student will write a Research Proposal on a topic of personal interest/value. This assignment is a comprehensive proposal to include clarifying the research question; examining the scholarly literature; designing the research; data collection, preparation, and examination; analyzing the data; and reporting on the research. The paper must follow the current APA style, contain at least 3,000 words of content (excluding the title page and references), and utilize at least 10 scholarly (peer-reviewed) articles.
