Additionally, students will prepare new evidence-based practice corrections policy.

Rationale

The challenges related to prisons, rehabilitation, re-entry, alternative court, community corrections, and recidivism within the broader context of criminal justice policy research pose some of the greatest questions in the field, and the need for additional understanding and research is great. The student will have the opportunity to extensively examine and discuss these challenges and to be equipped with the latest research on related topics.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Discuss the three components of rival correctional theories.
  2. Measure the theory of retribution or just deserts and how these perspectives differ for liberals and conservatives.
  3. Evaluate rational choice theory and its underlying assumptions.
  4. Discuss the reasons the United States prison population is higher than any other nation.
  5. Evaluate what restorative justice is and its underlying assumptions.
  6. Evaluate the theory of rehabilitation and its underlying assumptions.
  7. Evaluate what reentry is, its underlying assumptions, and how public perceptions of reentry and rehabilitation have evolved.
  8. Know the difference between a longitudinal and cross-sectional study.

The student will complete 5 Discussions in this course. The student will post one thread of at least 1000 words. The student must then post 2 replies of at least 500 words each. For each thread, students must support their assertions with at least 2 scholarly citations in the current APA format. Each reply must incorporate at least 2 scholarly citations in the current APA format. Any sources cited must have been published within the last five years. Acceptable sources include textbooks (readings provided), and the Bible.
