Course Description

This course is part one of a course sequence initiated for the study of servant leadership.  The course focuses on an introduction to leadership skills, attitudes, and practices, particularly connecting with others and self-leadership skills.  Special emphasis is placed on biblical perspectives and practices in leadership.

Rationale

There are various leadership principles, skills, and values necessary to develop effectively in one’s growth as an influential leader. This course delivers instruction in those areas, as well as accountability in developing self-reflection and application of leadership knowledge. A major focus of this course is assisting in the building of helpful relationships with others and the development of self-leadership in one’s practice and growth as a person of positive influence.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Initiate and contribute to the development of skills necessary to connect with others.
  2. Examine how to incorporate a Christian worldview into one’s leadership beliefs and practices.
  3. Discuss key beliefs about leadership and personal experiences in connecting with others.
  4. Discuss key heart attitudes necessary for successful self-leadership.
  5. Assess his/her strengths and weaknesses in developing self-leadership skills.
  6. Name and explain important leadership traits and skills as portrayed by select images.

Discussions (2)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided promptly for each discussion. Each thread must be 300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to at least 2 classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 150 words.

Reading Quiz Assignment

The student will take a Reading Quiz Assignment in this course upon completion of the assigned reading in the respective textbook. The quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 7 short-answer questions, and have a 2-hour time limit.

Autobiography Assignment

The student will complete a 2-page autobiography detailing significant events throughout his/her life and tying in leadership principles that he/she learned from each event. The autobiography must follow the exact instructions outlined in CANVAS.

7 Habits Assignment

The student will write a paper on Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The paper must be 8 paragraphs, highlighting 3 habits the student believes to be the most beneficial to himself/herself personally.

Structured Reading Guide Assignment

The student will write thorough short-answer questions upon completing the assigned reading in the respective textbook. The Structured Reading Guide will contain 11 questions and allows open-notes and open-book format.

Vision Map Assignment

The student will create a Vision Map based on specific required categories. The student will answer questions based on the assigned Learn items and use the provided template to create a personal Vision Map.

Habitude Quizzes (2)

The student will take 2 Habitudes quizzes in this course upon completion of reading the assigned course textbooks and the course presentations. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 30 multiple-choice and true/false questions, short-answer questions and have a 2-hour time limit
