Course Description

Set notation and operations, properties of probability, expectation, and discrete and continuous probability distributions of a single random variable.

For information regarding the prerequisites for this course, please refer to the Academic Course Catalog.

Rationale

An important component of the field of mathematics is the ability to handle uncertainty.  Very little in life is certain, and having a methodical and objective approach to such situations allows solutions to problems that would otherwise go unsolved.  Probability is the subject specifically targeted to handling uncertainty.  This course explores the key concepts of single-variable probability and its importance to the field of statistics.  It is the first in a two-course sequence that helps prepare interested students to take SOA/CAS Exam P/1.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

A. Perform probability calculations for distributions of a single variable in both discrete and continuous contexts including means, variances, and moment-generating functions

B. Learn how to identify and apply common distribution types, such as the uniform, binomial, hypergeometric, negative binomial, Poisson, gamma, and normal distributions

C. Demonstrate the ability to use probability to solve many real-world problems

D. Gain an appreciation for probability’s role in modern society

Course Requirements Checklist

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

Homework Exercises

Using WebAssign, the student will complete homework assignments in this course. There will be a set of questions assigned for each of the homework exercises. For modules with a quiz or exam, a score of at least 80% must be earned on the homework in order to open the quiz or exam for that module (MLO: A, B, C, D).

Quizzes (4)

Using WebAssign, the student will complete 4 quizzes in this course. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes and will contain multiple-choice and short answer questions. Each quiz may be taken up to 3 times (MLO: A, B, C, D).

Quiz: Exams (3)

The student will complete 3 open-book/open-notes exams throughout the course in WebAssign. Exams are based on the Learn material and homework assignments. Exams are timed and are expected to be completed in one sitting (MLO: A, B, C, D).

NOTE: The student must submit written work for all exam and final exam questions. Any exams or final exams submitted without written work will not be accepted.

Written work means that the student records the work needed to answer each exam question on paper. The student should number the work for each question as he/she works through the exam so that his/her instructor can easily tell what work goes with each question. After the student submits the exam, they will either scan or take cell phone photos of the written work and then upload them through the submission link.

Final Exam

The student will complete a comprehensive, open-book/open-notes Final Exam in WebAssign. The Final is timed and is expected to be completed in one sitting (MLO: A, B, C, D).

NOTE: The student must submit written work for all final exam questions. Any exams submitted without written work will not be accepted.

Written work means that the student records the work needed to answer each exam question on the paper. The student should number the work for each question as he/she works through the exam so that his/her instructor can easily tell what work goes with each question. After the student submits the exam, they will either scan or take cell phone photos of the written work and then upload them through the submission link in Blackboard.
