Course Description

This course studies the historical and contemporary issues surrounding social welfare and policy in the U.S. Particular focus is placed on analyzing, formulating, and advocating for policies that advance social well-being.

Rationale

Social welfare and social policy impact individuals, families, and communities. Social workers interface with social welfare and policy regularly. Social workers need to understand the history and current structure of the policies and systems that impact society allowing them to advocate for justice and effectively collaborate with clients.

The student will complete 5 Discussions in this course. The student will post one thread of at least 350 words by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday of the assigned Module: Week. The student must then post two replies of at least 150 words by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of the assigned Module: Week. The final Discussion initial thread and replies are due on Friday of Module 8: Week 8 by 11:59 p.m. (ET).

Article Review Assignment

The student must identify a media article that reflects research applicable to a policy topic covered in the course material and use the media article as the basis of a 2-page review.

Media PowerPoint Presentation Assignment

A variety of media sources address social policies such as news outlets (newspapers, internet, and news stations) and social media. You will be responsible to submit a Media PowerPoint Presentation via Narrated PowerPoint of a policy that was featured in a media source within the past 6 months. You will present the information on the topic professionally for 5–10 minutes integrating the textbook reading and course video clips and lectures.

You will write a 6–8-page research-based paper in the current APA format that focuses on analyzing a current policy. The paper must include at least 3-4 reference(s) in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. The Policy Proposal consists of three parts: the Research Paper, the Policy Brief, and the Fact Sheet. For Module 5: Week 5 – Module 7: Week 7, you will submit different parts of the project.
