Course Description

This course examines the tough issues facing today’s children and adolescents and identifies appropriate strategies and interventions for effective growth and change. Developmental stages, learning styles, personality factors, and social influences are examined, as well as the efficacy of community counseling resources and programs. Ethical concerns and multicultural factors are also considered.

Rationale

This course helps counselors, pastors, and parenting champions identify issues that can divide children from their parents and employ the strategies necessary to help families reconnect and thrive.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the developmental stages and needs of both girls and boys from infancy through adolescence and understand these developmental transitions and gender differences.
  2. Assist parents and teachers with child and adolescent behavior, learning styles, and personality orientation.
  3. Describe the current state of social issues and how they are influencing today’s adolescents (i.e., technology, bullying, sexual promiscuity, STDs, drug addiction, pornography, suicide, divorce, broken families, etc.).
  4. Identify community resources and programs for assisting children and adolescents in the student’s local community in order to facilitate the most effective and comprehensive care.
  5. Describe religious/spiritual influences and their implications on the family.

Discussions (4)

Students will participate in four Discussions. First, they will answer the discussion question(s) in a new thread with a minimum of 250 words by Friday of the discussion module. Then, they must reply to two classmates’ threads (with a minimum of 150 words each) by Monday of the discussion module (MLO: A, C, D, E).

Parent Interview Assignment

Students will complete a parent interview with reflections. Part one will consist of 12 questions with answers. Part two will consist of a written reflection that interacts with the responses given by the interviewee (MLO: A, B, E).

Quiz: Bringing Up Boys

Students will complete a quiz that covers the material presented in the Bringing up Boys book. The quiz is open book and is comprised of 50 multiple-choice and true/false questions. The quiz must be completed in one sitting where you are provided with 90 minutes to complete the quiz. Once the quiz is opened, it must be completed; it cannot be saved and resumed at a later time (MLO: A, B, C, D).

Movie Review Assignment

The Movie Review assignment provides an opportunity to focus on a movie that relates to child and adolescent issues. Students must interact with the movie’s content in a way that aids understanding of the impact of movies on the counseling process, including a Review, the Therapeutic Implications, and the Personal/Professional Implications of the movie. Please see the specific assignment instructions included with the course materials (MLO: A, C, D).

4-MAT Book Review Assignment

The 4-MAT Book Review system is a way of responding to readings that requires the learner to interact with new ideas on several levels, including a Summary, Concrete Responses, a Reflection, and personal Application.
