Course Description

A study of biblical principles in establishing and maintaining a ministry to adolescents. Emphasis is placed upon a system of philosophy and general principles for adolescent ministry. Special attention is given to developing a youth ministry mission statement, objectives, and strategy.

Rationale

The student considering youth work needs a basic overview of a biblical model of youth ministry as it relates to the role of the professional youth worker and the role of the church. This course is designed to provide a biblical foundation of youth ministries for the student considering youth ministries as a volunteer and/or professionally. In addition, this course is the foundation of the educational process of the prospective professional youth worker at Liberty University.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Evaluate the current conditions of youth culture and the causes of youth beliefs and behavior.
2. Describe the past history of youth ministry both inside the church and outside the church.
3. Analyze the role of youth ministry within the context of the local church.
4. Describe biblical philosophy and strategies for current youth ministry.
5. Identify the various roles adults can have within youth ministry.

Discussions (3)

Discussions are a collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided promptly for each discussion. Each thread must be a minimum of 300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to a minimum of two other classmates’ threads, even though more replies are encouraged. Each reply must be a minimum of 200 words. Essay Assignments (3)

The student will complete three essays of which one is opinion and two are in correlation with class presentations. The essay is the student’s way to engage with his or her ministry opinions and experiences and with the presentations from the student work text. Each essay will have its own prompt. (MLOs: C, D, E)

Cultural Observation Project Assignments (2)

This project is completed in two parts: the Cultural Observation Project Location Abstract Assignment (minimum of at least 50 words) and the Cultural Observation Project Assessment Paper Assignment (minimum of at least 4 pages), based on an observation as defined in the Location Abstract, each in a separate module. The in-person observation must be at least 1 hour and 15 minutes in length. (MLO: A)

Ministry Interview Project Assignments (2)

This project is completed in two parts: the Ministry Interview Project Interview Abstract Assignment (minimum of at least 50 words) and the Ministry Interview Project Strategy Paper Assignment (minimum of at least 4 pages), based on two interviews as defined in the Interview Abstract, each in a separate module. The interviews may be done via a phone call, a video chat, or in person. (MLOs: D, E)

Quizzes (6)

Each quiz will cover the Learn materials for the designated modules: weeks stated in its instructions. Each quiz contains 40 multiple-choice, true/false, and/or matching questions, is open-book/open-notes and must be completed in 60 minutes.
