Course Description
An examination of the function of the Bible within pastoral ministry with a specific focus on the Bible in preaching/teaching, counseling, church administration, and the pastor’s devotional life. The class will examine the unique purpose of the Bible in each setting and a methodology for applying the Bible in each context. (Available to DMIN Students only).

Rationale
Pastors must understand the context for the use of Scripture in pastoral ministry. This will include philosophical, theological, historical, and practical considerations of Scripture in pastoral ministry. It is critical for the pastoral leader to deepen his or her understanding of the complexity of Scriptural usage in pastoral ministry and to provide clear tools for biblical application.
Measurable Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Discuss the major content of the Bible by summarizing the general message of every book of the Bible.
- Explain various methodologies as applied to relating the Bible in different contexts.
- Demonstrate how to apply the Bible in preaching, counseling, administration, and devotional practice.
- Relate other fields of study in an appropriate way to pastoral ministry while maintaining a biblical foundation.

The student is required to write a paper of at least 2,500 words in the current Turabian format that lists 5–8 different contexts in which a pastor must use the Bible. The uniqueness of the context needs to be explained along with a detailed description of how the method of biblical study, interpretation, and application is changed by the context.

Reading Strategies Paper: Proposal Assignment
In preparation for the Reading Strategies Paper Assignment, the student will submit a 300–500-word Reading Strategies Paper: Proposal Assignment. The proposal will serve as a prospectus for the Reading Strategies Paper Assignment and will include the passage of Scripture chosen and the 5–8 unique contexts that will be incorporated in the Reading Strategies Paper Assignment.

Reading Strategies Paper: Annotated Bibliography Assignment
The student will compose an annotated bibliography consisting of 15–20 scholarly sources to be utilized in the Reading Strategies Paper Assignment. The bibliography must contain at least 5 academic books, and at least 5 scholarly journals, and contain no more than 5 websites. Additionally, the student will provide a 2–3-sentence summary for each source to generalize the source as it relates to the research.

Reading Strategies Paper Assignment
The student will compose a Reading Strategies Paper to explore various reading strategies using different pastoral contexts about a passage of Scripture. The paper must contain at least 5,000 words and will illustrate the application of the passage as appropriate for 5–8 different pastoral contexts, including detailed explanations of the intended methodology.
