Course Description

Bibliographic research in the field of music education. Students will identify, access, evaluate, and interpret music education resources and materials in preparation for performing research on music education topics.

This course is intended to take the student through the process of research in preparation for developing the internship and master’s thesis or project design. It is a prerequisite to completing the Internship and the Master’s Thesis and culminates in the preliminary research proposal.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Articulate the differences between quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods.
  2. Formulate research questions and hypotheses.
  3. Utilize research methods practically about upcoming individual research projects.
  4. Develop strategies of inquiry for research topics.
  5. Identify an area of interest; ethnic group, geography, or genre.
  6. Create a research strategy tailored specifically to the student’s chosen field.

Discussions (6)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided promptly for each Discussion. Each thread must be 150–300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 or more classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 100–200 words.

Writing Exercise Assignments (4)

The student will complete 4 research-based exercises in the current Turabian format that focuses on the development of their research topic.

Editing/Critique Assignment

The student will download the completed draft of an imaginary student’s paper from Canvas to engage in an editing/review exercise.

Research Training Course Assignment

The student will complete the Research Training Course Assignment written course through the National Institutes of Health, Office of Extramural Research. This course replaces an earlier training program run by the National Institutes of Health. The course will take about 3-5 hours to complete. The student will begin by reading and studying the information provided in the PHP Course Materials pdf and then take the assessment using the answer sheet provided. Upon completion of the assessment, students will submit their answer sheets online.

Final Annotated Bibliography Assignment

The student will write an annotated bibliography with 20 scholarly sources on the topic of her choice relating to music. The final submission should include a title page, citations, and annotations for each source. The final document will be approximately 10 pages long (minimum).
