Course Description

This is an intensive course in accounting theory and practice regarding partnerships, business combinations, and consolidated financial statements. The course attempts to strike a balance between procedural explanations of currently applied accounting practices and the theoretical framework upon which those practices are based. Alternatives to current practice are also discussed.

This senior-level course, intended primarily for those who plan to enter the accounting profession, is also useful to others who desire an in-depth study of multiple entities. The accounting student who seeks professional success in his or her career needs to understand both theory and practice to meet the challenges that await him or her in the future. The student is presented with concepts and applications of both theory and practice. The student is also introduced to alternatives to current practices to enhance his or her understanding of accounting practices that may evolve in the future.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Apply accounting theory in analyzing and solving complex problems in accounting for partnerships.
  2. Prepare consolidated financial statements by GAAP.
  3. Apply accounting theory in analyzing and solving complex problems in accounting for consolidated entities.

Discussions (4)

The student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. Threads must be supported by at least 1 scholarly source in the current APA format. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 1 other classmate’s thread. The reply must be at least 150 words.

 

You will complete Read & Interact Assignment textbook readings. These readings will be accessed through the McGraw Hill Connect platform located in the Module’s Learn sections and the Assignments page in Canvas. These readings are labeled with the author(s)’ name(s) and the required chapter number. You will be required to read and interact with the textbook. There are points associated with each of these reading assignments. At the end of each assigned chapter, Connect will automatically sync your grade for the reading to Canvas. To complete any Connect Homework Assignments, you need to first complete all your Read & Interact Textbook Assignments.

Homework Assignments (9)

The student will complete Homework Assignments using Connect. The homework includes graded reading assignments and problems which are designed to prepare the student for the course quizzes.

Excel Spreadsheet Project Assignments (2)

The student will complete a 2-part Excel Spreadsheet Project. The student will develop an Excel spreadsheet illustrating the consolidation process used when the parent company applies the equity method, partial equity method, or initial value method to account for its investment in a subsidiary company, presented in the textbook under the heading of “Excel Spreadsheet Project.”

Quizzes (4)

Each quiz will be completed in Connect and will cover the Learn material for the assigned Modules: Weeks. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 25 multiple-choice questions, and have a 2-hour time limit.
