Course Description

This course involves an examination of descriptive statistics and basic inferential statistical techniques. Hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, analysis of variance, correlation techniques and nonparametric statistical methods will be discussed.

For information regarding prerequisites for this course, please refer to the Academic Course Catalog.

Rationale

This course is designed to help educators learn how to perform statistical tests in SPSS, interpret, and then report the results using current APA format. This is an 800 level doctoral course and is not intended to teach basic statistics. It is assumed that candidates have taken basic courses in statistics during their undergraduate and master’s programs. At the conclusion, the candidate should be able to write up a result section to a quantitative dissertation. The focus will be to help candidates select the correct statistical test, run assumptions test, reject or fail to reject the nulls, and apply what they have learned in actual practice.

To maximize learning, it is advised that the candidate begins each week by reading the Warner textbook chapter(s) and then completing the corresponding SPSS tutorial. Using the tutorial as a guide, the candidate will then complete a results section write-up using current APA reporting procedures. Finally, at the end of the week the candidate should re-read the Warner textbook and then take the weekly quiz. The weekly quiz will be used to evaluate individual understanding of the content and basic theory underlining each statistical analysis.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the candidate will be able to:

  1. Develop an understanding of basic statistical terms including normal distribution, measures of central tendency, variability, levels of measurement, effect size, and probability.
  2. Utilize statistical software to calculate and interpret descriptive statistics, to explore data and solve statistical problems, and to communicate statistical results in accordance with current APA style.
  3. Utilize statistical hypothesis testing procedures when rejecting or failing to reject the null hypothesis.
  4. Utilize the appropriate statistical procedures to answer an educational research question.
  5. Utilize a Biblical world view in formulating an understanding of quantitative analysis.

Course Assignment

Textbook Readings

The candidate will complete assigned readings from course texts and course documents.

Course Requirements Checklist (CRC)

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the candidate will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

Discussions (2)

The candidate will complete the Discussion in two parts: 1) the posting of a thread in response to the stated prompt and 2) the posting of at least two replies to peers’ threads. All posts must be in current APA format and include citations and references. Canvas. (CLO: E)

Quizzes (6)

The candidate will take 6 open-book quizzes covering the assigned Warner textbook readings and exercises. Each quiz will consist of 25 multiple-choice questions (two points each). The candidate will have 2 hours to complete each quiz. (CLO: A, B, C, D)

Write-Up Assignments (6)

The candidate will write up a Findings Section to a case study provided by the instructor. The write-ups will relate directly to your weekly readings and activities. Using a given scenario and dataset, the candidate will complete the write-up and turn it into Canvas. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
