Course Description

A foundational study of the basic disciplines of theology. The following theological disciplines will be examined: biblical, systematic, historical, dogmatic, and contemporary theologies.

For information regarding the prerequisites for this course, please refer to the Academic Course Catalog.

Rationale

In order to develop a well-rounded Christian world and life view, it is important that the student have a working knowledge and understanding of each theological discipline and how each relates to the others. This will provide the student with the theological foundations to serve and teach more effectively in the local church and community context. Hence, this course gives students general exposure to the “whole” of theology.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify the individual theological disciplines in theology.
  2. Explain why the study of biblical and systematic theology is foundational and necessary for a complete understanding of theology.
  3. Demonstrate how these theological disciplines will affect the Christian church’s worship and practice.
  4. Identify the major periods in historical theology.
  5. Analyze the differing viewpoints in reformation soteriology, a select theological issue in historical theology.
  6. Recognize the major categories of dogmatic theology.
  7. Evaluate select theological topics in contemporary theology.
  8. Evaluate how theological disciplines affect an individual’s worship and practice.

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1.

Discussion Board Forums (4)

Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will participate in 4 Discussion Board Forums, each spanning 2 modules/weeks. First, the student will answer the forum question(s) in a thread of 400–500 words. Second, the student must reply to 2 classmates’ threads (in 200–250 words each).

Journal Article Critiques (2)

The student will select 2 peer-reviewed, scholarly journal articles on 2 different topics. The topic for Journal Article 1 is the discipline of biblical theology. The topic for Journal Article 2 is the discipline of systematic theology. The student will write a 2-page, double-spaced critique for each article that adheres to the current Turabian style.

Research Paper on a Select Topic in Contemporary Theology

There are 3 parts to this assignment:

  1. Research Paper: Topic

The student will select a Topic in contemporary theology.

  1. Research Paper: Proposal

The student will complete a Research Paper Proposal containing the following components: a cover page, a working thesis statement, the need for the study, the procedure of the study, and a working bibliography. The thesis statement, need, and procedure for the study must total 1–2 pages.

  1. Research Paper: Final Submission

The student will write a 10–12-page Research Paper using the Topic and Proposal previously submitted. The paper must include 7 sections: Cover, Thesis, Table of Contents, Introduction, Body, Conclusion, and Bibliography.

Exams (4)

The student will complete 4 exams throughout the course, which will cover all material from the assigned readings. All exams contain 20 multiple-choice, true/false, and matching questions; are open-book/open-notes; and must be completed in 1 hour. Preparation and study are essential for these exams.
