Course Description
This course provides the student with a detailed introduction to aspects of aviation safety, risk management, and the associated components of pilot psychology, human factors, and accident trends, factors, and analysis. Students will explore and develop their identity as aviation leaders as it relates to safety.

Rationale
Safety is important in every aspect of aviation, and pilots and maintainers are an integral part of creating a culture of safety in their aircraft and organizations. Considering this, the aviation student must learn all aspects of safety and understand how different agencies work together to lower accident rates.
Measurable Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe aviation safety and risk management concepts.
- Discuss the historical context of flight safety and the development of the FAA, NTSB, ICAO, and OSHA.
- Apply the principles of aviation safety programs to the student organization.
- Examine select accident reports while applying lessons learned to current operations.
- Introduction to Crew Resource Management (CRM) concepts.
- Discuss the merits of aviation safety objectives.
- Write/discuss an aviation mishap.
- Explain the different accident prevention methodologies, including equipment and procedures.
- Discuss and apply biblical references and viewpoints within safety topics, leadership opportunities, and personal growth.

Discussion: Class Introductions
The student will post a video introduction of himself or herself and then reply to two other classmates. (MLO: A, B, C, F, H, I)
Discussions (4)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences and a chance to share thoughts with other students. After reading each prompt, the student will post a thread of 500 words minimum. In addition to the thread, the student will post replies of 250 words minimum to two (2) other students’ threads. At least 2 scholarly sources are required for the initial thread. Acceptable sources are course readings, Bible, and peer-reviewed journal articles. At least 1 biblical principle must be integrated. (MLO: A, B, C, F, H, I)
Book Report Assignment
The student will write a report with a 2-page body on either the FAA Risk Management Handbook OR the FAA Operator’s Manual: Human Factors in Aviation Maintenance. Biblical support for the topic is required. The report must use the current APA format and include a title page and a reference page that cites the Handbook or Operator’s Manual and any additional sources if utilized. (MLO: A, B, C, F, H, I)
Crew Resource Management (CRM) Case Study Assignment
The student will read one of the accident reports found in the assignment instructions and write a 1-page case study paper in the current APA format. After reading the report, the student will identify at least 1 CRM problem/issue that led to the crash, then suggest a CRM solution from your textbook reading/videos and recommend the best solution that should have been implemented to possibly avoid future accidents. Reflection/Connecting Paper Assignments (2)
The student will write a 250-word minimum reflection/connect story from your work/family life or pull from weekly instructional material with an inspirational, faith-centered theme. Relate a scripture or biblical reference that connects with the story/topic. (MLO: A, F, I)
Final Paper Assignments (2)
Final Paper: Outline Assignment
The student will write a 1 to 2-page outline for the Final Paper. The outline will introduce the topic that the student is writing about for the final paper. The outline will include a title page, the outline, and a reference page (min 3 references, not including the bible). APA format will be followed for the title page and the reference page. The goal is for the reader of the outline to gather a basic comprehensive idea of where the paper will go. (MLO: A, C, E, F, I)
Final Paper: Final Draft Assignment
The student will write a final paper with a 3 to the 4-page body on a topic that is related to aviation safety (either on the ground or in the air). This is not an aircraft accident analysis and/or review paper. However, the student may use aircraft accidents as supporting data, but not as main topics. The goal is to explore, research, critically think, and present a topic that the student found interesting in the course material. (MLO: A, C, E, F, I)
Accident Review Assignments (2)
Accident Review: PowerPoint Assignment
The student will submit a PowerPoint presentation based on ONE (1) accident from assignment instructions. The presentation must include a discussion of the pilot’s (Capt/FO) experience, maintenance practices, details of the accident, causal factors, and a professional recommendation for how the crash could have been avoided. The integration of YouTube links and other graphics is encouraged. The presentation will be a minimum of 10 slides. Each slide will include in-text source citations and a reference slide at the end of the presentation in APA format. Any references cited must be formatted according to the current APA style.
Accident Review: Reflection/Connect Paper Assignment
The student will also submit a 1-page reflection paper which will tie together the accident and faith-centered thoughts with biblical reference and support.

Quizzes (8)
The student will complete 8 open-book, open-notes quizzes. Six of these assessments will include 25 multiple-choice, multiple-answer, essay, and/or true/false questions. The Quiz: Midterm and Quiz: Final will have 50 multiple-choice, multiple-answer, and true/false questions. Each quiz will be based on the material from the assigned Module(s): Week(s) Learn section. For six of the quizzes, the student will have 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete each quiz. For the Quiz: Midterm and Quiz: Final, the student will have 3 hours to complete each quiz.
