Course Description

This course introduces candidates to a range of methods used in educational research.  This survey of educational research methods addresses the difference between qualitative and quantitative research and basic versus applied research methods.

The objective of this course is to prepare the doctoral candidate with a basic understanding of the nature of educational research and the range of research designs employed in social science research.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the candidate will be able to:

  1. Differentiate between basic and applied research.
  2. Describe the nature and characteristics of quantitative inquiry.
  3. Describe the nature and characteristics of qualitative inquiry.
  4. Describe the nature of applied research and program evaluation.
  5. Employ improved academic writing skills and the ability to communicate clearly and succinctly.
  6. Critically evaluate educational literature.

Discussions (5)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the candidate is required to create 5 threads in response to the provided prompt, one for each discussion. Each thread must be 400–600 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the candidate is required to reply to the threads of at least 2 classmates. Each reply must be 200–300 words. (MLO: A, B, C, D, E)

Article Analyses (3)

The candidate will analyze 3 research articles during the course. The candidate must analyze and critique 1 traditional qualitative research article, 1 traditional quantitative research article, and 1 applied or program evaluation research article. Each analysis must be at least 3 pages. (MLO: A, B, C, D, E)

Total No.of Quizzes (6)

The candidate will complete 6 quizzes during the course. Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned modules. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 25 multiple-choice and true/false questions, and have a 1-hour time limit. (MLO: A, B, C, D)
