Course Description

Rationale

Jonathan Edwards is one of the greatest thinkers in American history and was a key influence on the Great Awakening and the American evangelical tradition. The course covers the transformation of American colonial history, emphasizes religious themes, evaluates biblical worldview principles, and traces changes in the Edwards historiography. The course is interdisciplinary, as Edwards was a diverse thinker, and is evaluated from historical, religious, social, philosophical, scientific, and literary perspectives.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify the major works and events in the life of Jonathan Edwards.
2. Describe the influence of Jonathan Edwards on the American evangelical tradition.
3. Evaluate interpretative and historiographical approaches in American religious history.
4. Apply biblical principles to the problems and issues of American history.
5. Demonstrate university competencies in research, writing, and documentary analysis.

Total Discussions (5)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will create a video thread for the first 4 in response to the provided topic for each, and the last will be based on the research done for the final project. Directed readings for these discussions are provided in the Discussion Resources section for the assigned Module: Week. Each video thread must be approximately 3 minutes (2:30 minutes minimum; 4:30 minutes maximum), must be in video format, and must be submitted to the assigned discussion. Each video thread must demonstrate course-related knowledge, incorporate required reading, and make reference to at least 3 scholarly sources. In addition to the video or video link, the student’s thread must include an abstract (4–5 sentences) and a list of at least 3 sources. In addition to the video thread, the student will reply to at least 3 other classmates’ video threads. Each reply must be at least 100 words.

Quiz: Preliminary

The Quiz: Preliminary is an assessment instrument to measure the student’s knowledge of eighteenth-century colonial America (the world of Jonathan Edwards). The quiz tests background knowledge, so there is nothing to prepare for. Poor performance will not affect the student’s final grade. The quiz contains 40 multiple-choice questions and has a 30-minute time limit; there is a penalty for exceeding the time limit.

Essay Assignments (2)

The student will write two (2) brief essays of 1–2 pages each on an assigned primary source or scholarly article. He or she will do additional background research on the document, figure, or event, identifying at least two other primary or scholarly sources. The essay must include at least 3 footnotes and a separate bibliography containing at least 3 sources in the current Turabian format. This assignment assesses historical research, documentary analysis, writing ability, and historical citation standards.

Prospectus Assignment

The student will submit a written research prospectus for the Research Paper Assignment. The prospectus must have a cover page and 1-2 pages of narrative, describing the significance of the project, available sources for research, a suggested outline for development, and an anticipated thesis. The prospectus must include a bibliography containing at least 10 sources in the current Turabian format. Sources must include primary sources and material from JSTOR and the Charles Evans Early American Imprints series.

Research Paper Assignment

The Research Paper Assignment builds on the work of the prospectus and the annotated bibliography. The paper must be about 10 pages, with 10 reference footnotes and 10 sources. The footnotes and bibliography must be in the current Turabian format. In addition to the paper, the student will submit a video presentation of his or her research as a video via a discussion thread.
