Course Description

A review of basic arithmetic and elementary algebra. A grade of C or better is required in order to go on to a higher-numbered mathematics course. This course may not be used in meeting General Education requirements in mathematics. (Developmental Math is a component of the Bruckner Learning Center.)

Rationale

MATH 100 is designed as a review of beginning algebra in order to prepare the non-mathematics major who does not have a strong background in Algebra I or has never taken an algebra course. The concepts covered will provide the knowledge needed to meet the prerequisites for MATH 110.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. State and apply definitions, postulates, and theorems related to number systems, solving equations and inequalities, exponents, polynomials, factoring, applications, rational expressions, graphing linear equations, and solving word problems.
2. Apply the appropriate mathematical skills for the concepts listed above.
3. Use mathematics to solve problems in the sciences, business, and various other fields of study.

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

Quiz: Study Skills

After reading “Math Anxiety & Study Skills”, the student will complete 5 short answer questions in Canvas.

Homework Assignments (52)

After reading the sections in the textbook, the student will complete homework (HW) assignments using the WebAssign software. A 70% is required on each assignment to move on to the next homework assignment or quiz in that Module.

Module Quizzes (12)

Quizzes will be administered through the WebAssign software. Each quiz has 10 questions and will be based on the reading and homework of the assigned module. There is no time limit for completion.

Testing Policies (TP) Assignments (4)

Before each Exam is a Testing Policies assignment which requires the student to review and agree to the testing policies before completing the Exam.  The student must earn 100% on the Testing Policies assignment in order to take the Exam.

Quiz: Exams (3)

Using the WebAssign software, the student will take 3 exams throughout the course. Exams are based on reading and Exercises. The exam will remain inaccessible until the minimum score is reached on the exam review assignments and the instructor will provide a password to access the exam at the appropriate time. All exams will have a time limit. The use of a basic calculator is allowed. The student must submit all written work for the exam questions. Exams submitted without the accompanying work will not be accepted.

Quiz: Final Exam

The student will complete a comprehensive Final Exam in WebAssign. A comprehensive Final Exam Review is provided to help prepare the student for the actual exam. The exam will remain inaccessible until the minimum score is reached on the review assignment and the instructor will provide a password to access the exam at the appropriate time. The Final Exam will have a time limit. The use of a basic calculator is allowed. The student must submit all written work for the final exam questions. Any Final Exam submitted without the accompanying work will not be accepted.
