Course Description
This course provides students with a variety of teaching strategies and evaluative approaches designed to promote a productive and effective learning environment. Selected teaching-learning theories are examined and applied to the role of nurse educators and nursing education practice. Students establish nurse education practicum goals and objectives and are required to obtain a nurse educator preceptor. Practicum hours involve practical observational and hands-on experiences in both clinical and classroom environments. An educational site affiliation agreement with a student-selected approved facility is secured and a practicum contract is developed and established with an approved nurse educator preceptor before enrollment in this course; practicum hours are initiated in NURS 618. Students must meet all pre-practicum requirements before enrollment in NURS 618; refer to Graduate Nursing Handbook for pre-practicum requirements.

Rationale
This course will provide the student with knowledge and skills that will enable him/her to effectively teach nursing content. It will also provide the student with modes of evaluation to determine his/her academic and clinical practice success.
Measurable Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Articulate a philosophy of nursing education and the role of a nurse educator.
- Demonstrate an understanding of selected teaching/learning theories and their applications to the adult learner.
- Design a research/evidence-based teaching plan on a selected nursing education content area employing appropriate teaching strategies and measures for evaluation.
- Analyze various teaching strategies and modes of evaluation.
- Develop clear and measurable practicum learning goals and objectives designed to facilitate role development as a nurse educator.
- Identify the competencies of an effective nurse educator and the attributes of a positive teacher-learner relationship and learning environment.
- Incorporate Christ-centered caring and biblical principles into teaching strategies and interactions with students.

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1.
Discussion Board Forums (2)
Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt. Each thread must be at least 500 words and be supported by at least 1 scholarly journal article in the current APA format and 1 biblical reference. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 250 words and cite at least 1 scholarly journal article and 1 biblical reference.
Practicum Goals and Objectives
The student must prepare 4–6 practicum goals and objectives, which are designed to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge and practical experience related to the role of a nurse educator. Once final approval is given by the instructor, the student will also submit a copy of the approved final version of the Practicum Goals and Objectives in their Typhon account as a Microsoft Word attachment and provide a copy to his/her preceptor before the start of practicum hours. The student has the opportunity to earn 10 hours toward his/her practicum hours for completing the Practicum Goals and Objectives.
Practicum/Clinical Logs (2)
The Practicum/Clinical Log is the documentation of the 200-hour practicum experience of which 50 hours will be completed in this course. The documentation is to be completed in Typhon. Instructions for setting up Typhon are found in the MSN Handbook. The log must be comprehensive in detail related to the experiences in the field and reflective of the National League for Nursing (NLN) competencies. The discussion must be in-depth and analytical. It must also include examples of how the student has applied the NLN competencies and readings from the textbooks and professional literature in the practicum setting. Any citations must be provided in the current APA format. Upon final approval of the practicum goals and objectives, the student will work on practicum hours weekly. Log submissions will be entered in Typhon.
NOTE: In addition to accruing the required number of practicum hours, there must be a passing grade for the practicum experience which includes the following: progression with the student’s established goals and objectives, an in-depth documentation of the practicum experiences as evidenced in the clinical log, and satisfactory preceptor evaluations. Failure to pass the practicum requirements will fail in the course; see the MSN Handbook for practicum expectations related to performance and professionalism.
Teaching Philosophy Paper
The student must write a 5–7age paper in the current APA format that will explore the student’s philosophy as a nurse educator. The student will relate the philosophy with an appropriate theoretical framework that guides the student’s professional practice. The paper must also include 5–7 scholarly references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible.
Teaching Plans (2)
A teaching plan is a cornerstone of an effective course. The student will develop 2 teaching plans related to a general nursing topic and service learning during this course. The student will use the provided worksheet as a framework for each topic-specific teaching plan. The student may be creative in the development of this assignment. A current APA-formatted reference page of 3–5 scholarly sources in addition to the textbooks is required for each lesson plan.

Teaching Plan Presentation
The student will record the execution of his/her previously submitted general teaching plan. The video must be approximately 10–15 minutes and be posted to YouTube as unlisted. The student will then submit the URL to his/her presentation in Blackboard.

Please complete part 2 of the professional portfolio you have started in NURS 617. Guidelines and rubrics can be found in the assignment folder.
Evaluations (3)
The preceptor will complete an evaluation of the student at the end of the practicum experience. The evaluation will be sent electronically over a secured server through Typhon to the preceptor. The instructor will retain the preceptor evaluation and may review it with the student upon request. Refer to the MSN Handbook for important detailed information.
The student will complete a Self-Evaluation, and an Evaluation of the Site and Preceptor, and the preceptor will complete an evaluation of the student.
All evaluations must be completed and submitted as directed. Failure to submit any of the end-of-course evaluations will result in a final course grade of “incomplete.” The student will be unable to progress to the next practicum course until the grade of “incomplete” is resolved.
Self-Evaluation
The student will complete a self-evaluation of his/her practicum experiences using the provided form (required but no point value assigned).
Student Evaluation of Site and Preceptor
The student will complete an evaluation of the site and preceptor for his/her practicum experience using the form provided. This document must be shared with the preceptor (required but no point value assigned).
Preceptor Evaluation
The preceptor will complete an evaluation of the student at the end of the practicum experience. The instructor will electronically send the evaluation to the preceptor via a secured server through Typhon.
