Intended to demonstrate a student’s ability to carry out original research. The thesis may be designed to answer practical research questions or address theoretical or ethical issues of interest to scholars and professionals in the field of criminal justice. Credit is not awarded until the thesis has been accepted.

Rationale
The thesis defense is a demonstration of the student’s ability to verbalize the ideas and concepts found in the thesis. It shows that the student is familiar with the material and offers an opportunity to discuss the student’s research orally. This is important because much of doctoral seminar work involves defending one’s research before a small audience.
Measurable Learning Outcomes
The student will be able to:
- Formulate substantive responses to questions regarding the submitted thesis.
- Provide a written copy of the final form of the thesis.
- Analyze and respond to challenges to claims made in the thesis.
- Demonstrate verbal communication skills related to presenting ideas and defending them with facts and sound reasoning.

- Answer questions about the research.
- Demonstrate ability to analyze ideas that challenge the interpretation presented in the thesis.
- Discussion and defense of the thesis on the advanced level.
