This course examines applied research methods used in the field of education. This course addresses the methods, skills, and knowledge necessary for completion of an applied research project.

A doctoral education should prepare the graduate to innovate within his/her workplace and identify implications for practice, policy, or research. This course is designed to equip the candidate to identify problems, design interventions, and generate solutions to improve policy or practice.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Explain the purpose of applied research.
  2. Differentiate between basic and applied research.
  3. Describe the nature and characteristics of applied research.
  4. Explain applied research data collection methods.
  5. Create a pie chart, trend, chart, and bar graph.
  6. Align applied research problems of practice with biblical principles related to human relationships.

The candidate will complete assigned readings from course texts and course documents.

Discussions (2)

Discussions are a collaborative experience. Therefore, the candidate will answer two Discussion prompts. Each initial post must be between 400 and 600 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the candidate will reply to at least two classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 150–250 words. Where applicable, candidate should use citations to support assertions in current APA format.

Introduction to the Problem Assignment

The candidate will use the information from the textbook reading to write an Introduction to the Problem for a proposed educational report. This is a 2-3 page assignment.

Focus Group Questions Assignment

For this assignment, the candidate will compose three focus group questions that will be used to answer the central research question for his/her study. This is a 3-4 page assignment.

Interview Questions Assignment

The candidate will develop three interview questions to help answer the central research question for his or her study. The three interview questions must be supported by the literature; thus, each interview question must contain at least one citation. This is a 3-4 page assignment.

Interview Transcription Assignment

The candidate will conduct an interview and transcribe the interview using the three interview questions developed in the Interview Questions assignment.

Qualitative Questionnaire Assignment

The candidate will compose three to five demographic questions and ten qualitative questions. This is a 3-4 page assignment.

Permission to Conduct the Research Assignment

The candidate will compose a letter or email written to the actual gatekeeper of the site where research will be conducted.

Research Topic Approval Assignment

Applied research candidates must have a topic approved to ensure that it meets applied research guidelines. This assignment serves as official approval for the candidate’s research topic. 

Survey Prompt Assignment

For this assignment, the candidate will compose three Likert scale survey questions that are supported by the literature to help answer the central research question for his or her study.

Textbook Quizzes (5)

The candidate will complete five open-book quizzes covering the assigned Claxton and Michael textbook readings. Each quiz will consist of 20 multiple-choice or true/false questions. The candidate will have 2 hours to complete each quiz.
