Course Description
Advanced study of moral development across the lifespan. Examination of themes and current research in physical, mental, emotional, and social domains pertinent to moral development. Special consideration is given to varying social and cultural contexts.

Rationale
An understanding of theory and research in moral development will serve as an important foundation for the student’s understanding of whole-person development. This course offers an opportunity for students to understand the complexities of moral development across the lifespan such that their future work in any setting will reflect the best evidence-based theory and practice available in hopes of making a maximum impact on Christ.
Measurable Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand the major concepts, theories, methodologies, and empirical findings in the study of moral development.
- Critique empirical research in moral development.
- Apply research in moral development to reflect upon real-life issues.
- Evaluate research in moral development in the context of biblical thought.
- Use empirical research to evaluate a moral development issue for one segment of the lifespan.

Discussions (3)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will create a discussion thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each discussion thread must be at least 350 words, have at least 2 scholarly sources, and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the discussion thread, the student is required to respond to at least two other classmate’s discussion tthreads Each discussion reply must be at least 200 words. (MLOs: 1, 3, 4)
Article Critique Assignment
The student will locate an empirical study in a peer-reviewed journal and write a 4-page critique of the article, paying special attention to research methods and connection to moral development. (MLOs: 1, 2)
Summary and Lesson Plan Assignment (7)
The student will write a 4-page paper in current APA format 1) summarizing the assigned readings and 2) devising a lesson plan for teaching in the context of higher education. (MLOs: 1, 2)
Midterm Essay Questions Assignment
The student will submit an open-book/open-note written assignment that consists of five essay questions. The assignment aims to help the student master and synthesize the class material. The assignment must be submitted as a Word document. (MLOs: 1, 2)
Moral Development Presentation: Topic and References Assignment
The student will choose a presentation topic within moral development and find references for his or her presentation. The student will submit the title page, presentation objectives, rough outline of the presentation, and reference page in APA style. A minimum of 15 academic sources (peer-reviewed journal articles, textbook chapters, academic books, etc.) is required. (MLOs: 1, 5)
Moral Development Presentation Assignment
The student will create a 15–20 minute Microsoft PowerPoint presentation that applies research in moral development to a moral development issue during a specific stage in the lifespan. (MLOs: 1, 5)
