This course is designed to introduce students to the knowledge, values, and skills necessary for social work practice in mental health settings. Topics will include roles and functions of social workers, diagnoses, and assessments.

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the knowledge, values, and skills necessary for social work practice in mental health settings. Topics will include roles and functions of social workers, diagnoses, and assessments. This course provides the needed foundation for the social work curriculum by providing students with basic knowledge about mental health practice in the social work field.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate Ethical and Professional Behavior (CSWE Competency 1)
    1. Make ethical decisions by applying the standards of the NASW Code of Ethics, relevant laws and regulations, models for ethical decision-making, ethical conduct of research, and additional codes of ethics as appropriate to the context.
    2. Use reflection and self-regulation to manage personal values and maintain professionalism in practice situations.
    3. Demonstrate professional demeanor in behavior, appearance, and oral, written, and electronic communication.
    4. Use technology ethically and appropriately to facilitate practice outcomes.
    5. Use supervision and consultation to guide professional judgment and behavior.
  2. Diversity (CSWE Competency 2)
    1. Apply and communicate an understanding of the importance of diversity and difference in shaping life experiences in practice at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels.

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

 

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided promptly for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 300 words, demonstrate course-related knowledge, include at least 2 peer-reviewed sources in addition to the course textbook, and integrate at least 1 biblical principle. Sources must be cited in the current APA format. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 50 words.

The discussions will assess Competency 1-Ethics/Prof. Behavior (values, cognitive/affective processes) and Competency 2-Diversity (knowledge).

 

The student will write a paper of at least 3 pages in the current APA format about a chosen diagnosis in the assigned sections from the course textbook. Each case study must include at least 1 scholarly reference published within the last 5 years in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible.

These case studies will assess Competency 1-Ethics/Prof. Behavior (values, cognitive/affective processes) and Competency 2-Diversity (knowledge).

 

The student will write a research-based paper of at least 5 pages in the current APA format that focuses on mental health assessment and a mental health diagnosis of the student’s choice. The paper must include at least 3 scholarly references published within the last 5 years in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible.

This paper will assess Competency 1-Ethics/Prof. Behavior (values, cognitive/affective processes) and Competency 2-Diversity (knowledge).

 

Each quiz will cover the course material and presentations for the assigned module: week. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 50 multiple-choice and true/false questions, and have a time limit of 60 minutes.

Exams assess Competency 1 (Ethics/Prof. Behavior) and Competency 2 (Diversity).
