Course Description

A study of the characteristics and responsibilities of a good leader as they relate to the worship leader. Planning, organizing, staff development, and decision-making are topics of consideration.

Rationale

Leadership is influence. One of the greatest opportunities for positive influence is that of the worship leader upon those who follow that lead into the presence of God in worship. This is a core course in the Master of Arts in Worship Studies curricula, and it is designed to enhance and encourage the worship leader with leadership skills in the following areas: personal character and godliness, worship ministry administration, and integrating the worship ministry throughout the church.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Articulate the need for quality spiritual leadership in the 21st-century church and worship ministries specifically.
  2. Identify his or her personal leadership aptitude, personality, and pathway to worship.
  3. Identify key integrational strategies for the worship ministry to permeate and support other church-wide ministries.
  4. Explain the foundational need for worship leaders and ministry leaders to live holy, pure, and “above-reproach” lives.
  5. Define the vision God has placed in his/her heart for the ministry he/she leads.

Discussions (5)

There are 5 Discussions completed in this course. Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to submit an initial post of at least 350 words. The student must post 2 replies of at least 150 words. For each initial post, the student must support his/her assertions with at least 2 citations in current Turabian parenthetical formatting. Each reply must incorporate at least 1 citation. Acceptable sources include course textbooks and the Bible. (MLO: B, D)

The student will complete a 5–6-page book critique of the Nance and Sanders texts. (MLO: A, B)

Personal Leadership Profile

The student will take a free personal assessment to further clarify his/her leadership strengths and personal leadership style. The student will submit a 4–5-page paper synthesizing the information gleaned from the assessments and describing his/her leadership style. This paper must be in Turabian format. (MLO: B, C)

Church Impact Paper

The student will write a 4–5-page paper describing at least four (4) needs in his/her ministry and explain how he/she intends to address those needs. The student must cite a minimum of 2 scholarly works in support of his/her proposed actions. (MLO: C, D)

Calendar and Budget Project

The student will create a calendar and budget to facilitate a strategic and effective ministry organization. (MLO: C)

Leader Research Project

Students will research a leader to consider how the leader impacts the way he/she leads their ministry team. The student must include the following information: 1) why this particular leader was chosen; 2) thorough research related to the leader; 3) analysis of the leader in light of course lectures and reading material; and 4) conclusion including four or more principles of application to one’s leadership. This is a formal paper (5–7 pages not including the title page and bibliography) that must be completed in the current Turabian format. A minimum of five (5) scholarly works must be cited and used in support of the project. (MLO: D)
