Course Description

Graphic Design II integrates design principles and software, typography, digital illustration, digital imaging, page layout, and prepress techniques with an emphasis on the design process from visualization to production. Students will be responsible for the design and production of a fully integrated campaign consisting of major projects including several components across multiple media forms. Individual and collaborative work is expected including branding and packaging as well as prototyping for interactive media. Each student is responsible for the production of design products, critiquing of designs, portfolio preparation, and presentation. (Formerly Advanced Graphics)

Rationale

Graphic Design II is a course that builds upon the theoretical and technical development from prerequisite courses. The student is then required to meld that skill and knowledge into a comprehensive and unified body of work while working wine a real-life group setting. This approach enables the student to embrace higher levels of creative productivity in actualizing personal style while meeting the requirements of a demanding creative and productive environment.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Develop and apply technical skills with computer hardware and software equipment as well as other equipment.
  2. Understand and apply industry standards and ethics through a Christian worldview.
  3. Design and produce a creative campaign from concept through production preparation, utilizing analytical research methods, preliminary ideation stages, and comprehensive presentation of works.
  4. Develop concepts and systems individually and collaboratively.
  5. Critique and evaluate creative work produced by professional designers as well as his/her work.

Discussions (2)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. The student will complete 2 Discussions in this course. Students will interact with student ideas and share progress with peers via Discussion interaction. Students will create a thread in response to the provided prompt as well as any requested imagery. Each thread must be at least 300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, you are required to reply to 2 classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 150 words.

Project: Career Profile Assignment

The student will research a specific graphic design occupation chosen from a provided list. The student will compile the data he/she finds into a neatly and professionally designed 1-page Career Profile document.

Project: Creative Image-Making Poster Assignment

The student will choose an event from the provided list and will develop a poster that promotes the event utilizing creative iimage-makingtechniques to create the primary imagery and type.

Social Good Concept Assignments (4)

This project will be completed in 4 parts:

Project:  Social Good Concept Proposal Assignment

The student will develop a well-designed research document, which includes a project proposal, strategy, collected visual research, and a mood board.

Project:  Social Good Concept Sketches Assignment

The student will develop a series of sketches for each major deliverable for the project.

Discussion:  Social Good Concept Sketches: Peer Share

The student will share sketches of the social good concept with peers and will critique peer designs via Discussions.

Project:  Social Good Concept Final Deliverables Assignment

The student will execute all major deliverables for the project using the appropriate software as indicated. Full physical prototypes of the work will be created, styled, and photographed for inclusion in the final presentation. Final projects will be presented using Adobe Spark Video, which will include process documentation, final renderings, and full voice-over description and analysis.

Museum Exhibition Concept Assignments (4)

This assignment will be completed in 4 parts:
