Course Description
This course will introduce students to the idea of aviation risk management. Course content includes discussions on aircraft systems, cross-country flying, elements of risk management, and automation.

Rationale
The purpose of this course is to provide new students with foundational tools that will help them to identify hazards and assess risks during flight operations.
Measurable Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Apply mental tools/checklists that help identify and mitigate problems encountered during flight.
- Recognize how attitudes and personal minimums impact professional and ethical decision-making.
- Explain how NTSB accident data relates to commonly encountered VFR flight scenarios.
- Analyze a proposed flight using a risk assessment tool.
Course Assignment
Course Requirements Checklist
After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.
Students must submit a 2–3 minute video introduction. Students may use a multi-media platform of choice to record their videos. Specific elements stated within the discussion prompt must be included. This will be a graded assignment. Students must also reply to at least 2 classmates’ introductions. Each reply must contain at least 150 words, including a question or a relevant follow-up response to guide the discussion.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided promptly for each Discussion. Each thread must be at least 250 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to at least 2 other classmates threads. VFR Scenario Essay Assignments (3)
The student will be given scenarios to read and analyze. A set of questions is given for each scenario that the student must answer. (MLO: A, B, C, D)
Navigation Log with Risk Assessment Assignment
The student will complete a 6-page/slide presentation on a sample flight, including a complete risk assessment. A sample is provided, and this assignment can be completed in the program of the student’s choice (PowerPoint, Word, etc.). The student will complete at least 250 words of comments and analysis on Page 6 of the assignment. (MLO: A, B, C, D)
Safety Survey Assignments (2)
The student will answer sets of short answer and essay questions. (MLO: A, B, C, D)
Quizzes (4)
Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the modules: weeks in which it is assigned. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain various question types, and have a set time limit. Each essay question must be answered in 50–75 words. (MLO: A, B, C, D)
