Rationale

The fourth Gospel focuses on Jesus’ Judean ministry, contains no narrative parables, and focuses primarily on events not recorded in the Synoptics. Beyond this, no other Gospel so greatly develops a biblical theology of the church and the Holy Spirit. Therefore, an understanding of the fourth Gospel is essential for all seeking a practical understanding of the life and teachings of the historical Jesus.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Explain and discuss relevant background issues of the Gospel of John, such as authorship, date, and purpose.
2. Compare and contrast the fourth gospel with the Synoptic Gospels.
3. Describe the relationship between key concepts introduced within the prologue that is developed throughout the fourth gospel.
4. Analyze the role signs, “I am” sayings, and Jewish feasts play in the fourth gospel’s presentation of Jesus’ identity.
5. Trace key theological themes as developed in the gospel.

Discussions (3)

The student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. The student must reference John, the Köstenberger and Morris textbooks, and at least 2 outside sources in support of his/her argument. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to at least 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 150 words, expand on the classmate’s thread, and add valuable input to the discussion. (MLOs: A, C, D, E)

I Am Paper Assignment

The student will write a 5-page paper (full pages, not including the title page or bibliography) about 1 of the “I am” statements made by Jesus (which will be assigned alphabetically by the instructor). The paper must include a description of the events that surround the statement, how the statement relates to God as revealed in the Old Testament, how the statement reveals the deity of Christ, and how this truth can apply practically to the student’s personal life. The student must reference the Bible, the Köstenberger and Morris textbooks, and at least 2 outside sources. In addition, the paper must also follow the current Turabian style. (MLO: C)

Theology Paper Assignment

The student will write a paper describing 1 of 3 doctrines (Jesus as Deity, the Holy Spirit, or Eternal Life). The paper must be double-spaced and contain at least 5 full pages of content (not including the title page or bibliography). The student must reference the Bible, the Köstenberger and Morris textbooks, and at least 2 outside sources. In addition, the student must also follow the current Turabian style. (MLO: E)

Personal Conversations With Jesus Assignment

The Gospel of John is the most intimate account of the life of Jesus among the four Gospels (90% of this Gospel is unique content). John includes personal conversations that Jesus has with various individuals or groups of people. The purpose of this assignment is to examine many of these conversations to get a glimpse of who Jesus is and what the person (or people) He was talking to did as a result of the conversations held with Jesus.
