Course Description

A 16-week course designed to develop research skills in concert with the completion of comprehensive exams and the development and approval of a dissertation prospectus. Students will write and secure approval of a Ph.D. prospectus outlining chapter-by-chapter content summation in alignment with a thesis statement and a comprehensive approach to research and writing. The course will additionally include preparation and completion of comprehensive exams. The dissertation prospectus must be approved prior to beginning dissertation writing, which will take place within the course once the prospectus is approved.

For information regarding the prerequisites for this course, please refer to the Academic Course Catalog.

Rationale

BIBL 987 is the transition course that assesses competency from Ph.D. in Bible Exposition course work and prepares the Ph.D. candidate for dissertation writing. This is accomplished through comprehensive exams, prospectus development and approval, and pairing the candidate with a dissertation mentor. All of these tasks are necessary before dissertation writing can formally commence.

  2. Demonstrate proficiency in exegetical and expositional analysis of Old and New Testament texts.
  3. Present and articulate an acceptable Ph.D. in Bible Exposition dissertation topic and thesis.
  4. Develop an acceptable PhD-level prospectus that includes a chapter-by-chapter synopsis of dissertation content.
  5. Organize a strategy and bibliography for dissertation research.
  6. Initiate research in relation to the Ph.D. dissertation, based on an approved Ph.D. prospectus.
  7. Secure a mentor for Ph.D. dissertation writing and development.
