Course Description
This course provides the student with the knowledge base necessary to understand the mechanisms of infectious disease transmission, select specific preventive methodologies in the control of particular diseases, and communicate the rationale for the various control methods.

Rationale
Even in the 21st century, infectious diseases continue to be a concern. In recent years, a number of new infectious agents have emerged to join an array of old nemeses. Understanding the epidemiology of these diseases is essential to eliminating the suffering they cause.
Measurable Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Discuss the epidemiology of the major infectious diseases and their impact on global populations.
- Explain the role of infectious agents as causes of morbidity and mortality in the context of economically developing nations.
- Discuss vector-borne conditions.
- Discuss the appropriate use of antibiotics and other chemotherapeutic agents for the management of infectious diseases.
- Describe methodologies for infectious disease surveillance on a regional and global scale.
- Evaluate the scientific evidence for best practices in the prevention of infectious diseases.
- Design infectious disease control strategies using evidence-based research.

Discussions (4)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt and reply to 2 other classmates’ threads.
In the Discussion: Service Project you will choose an organization with a focus on global health, infectious diseases in general, and/or a specific infectious disease. Once selected, 8 hours of volunteer time will be devoted to the organization and the experience will be summarized and graded in the discussion. This fulfills a CEPH accreditation requirement.
Journal Article Review Assignments (4)
The student will review 4 journal articles about a disease or topic found in the readings due in each of the even-numbered Module: Week. The student will write a 4–5-page paper in the current AMA format that summarizes the selected article and critiques the findings of the article. The paper must include at least 5 references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible.
Quizzes (7)
Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the Module: Week in which it is assigned. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 multiple-choice and/or true/false and 1 short essay question, and have a 1-hour time limit.
Service Learning Experience Project Assignment
During this course, you will select an organization (your choice) that has an emphasis on either global health, infectious diseases in general, and/or a particular infectious disease. Once you have made your selection, you will devote 8 hours of volunteer time to the organization working on a project and/or task mutually agreed upon by you and your point of contact with the organization. You will share information about the organization you are working with during the Module 5: Week 5 Discussion and submit your reflection and log during Module 8: Week 8.
