Course Description

To complete this internship, students must be currently working and/or serving in a local church. The church, mentor, and nature of involvement must be approved beforehand by the professor. The internship involves supervised work in an applied ministry setting. Students continue to apply, adapt, and improve their skills in specialized ministry situations. Students work under the supervision of a qualified pastor or deacon. Students must complete 150 hours of internship interaction with an average of 10 hours per week.

Rationale

The supervised pastoral internship will develop students into mature and competent ministers. The student will learn to integrate his classroom work into practical ministry with special emphasis on leading, caring, winning, proclaiming, relating, and growing.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate ministry readiness through spiritual development, theological application, and pastoral experience.
  2. Examine his/her call and role in ministry.
  3. Apply his/her spiritual gifts and strengths.
  4. Produce examples of their personal, spiritual formation through written reflections of their daily meditation, supplication, contemplation, and devotional reading.
  5. Demonstrate his/her total theological training in the practice of ministry and evangelism.
  6. Develop ministerial goals relating to church growth, evangelistic outreach, discipleship, and world missions.

Discussion Board Forums (4)

Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, there will be 4 Discussion Board Forums throughout this course. The student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided topic for each forum. Each thread must be at least 400 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 200 words. (MLO: A)

Application Contract

The student must find an appropriate place of ministry and a local pastor who will function as the field supervisor student. This arrangement will be formalized during the first module/week of the course through the submission of the “Application for LEAD 699 Internship.” (MLO: B, C, D)

Journal Entries (4)

During this course, the student is required to keep a journal that will be read by the instructor. In the journal, the student is invited to be honest and transparent about what is happening in his/her life and the internship. Each journal entry will be about 500 words. (MLO: D)

Sermon Manuscript (2)

The student will need to schedule and preach/teach 2 times in a church setting. Each of the 2 experiences must be prepared by drafting a sermon manuscript. Each manuscript must be 5–8 pages, double-spaced. (MLO: A, E, C)

Case Study

The student will find the websites of at least 3 growing churches in America, and prepare a Case Study on them. The Case Study will be 3–5 pages. (MLO: A, E, F)

Sermon Evaluation (2)

The student will preach/teach 2 times in a church setting. Following the preaching/teaching the supervising pastor will critique these sermons and submit the results. Evaluation forms are provided in the course. (MLO: D)

Supervisor’s Midterm Evaluation

The supervising pastor will prepare a Mid-Internship Evaluation of the student’s progress and ministry performance and submit the results. Evaluation forms are provided in the course. (MLO: B, E)

Reading Analysis (2)

The student will read the selected textbooks and submit an analysis and critique of the text. Each analysis must be 5–8 pages.

Resume Critique

The student will create and submit a ministry resume to be critiqued by the Career Center. The student will upload the critiqued copy of the resume from the Career Center. (MLO: B, F)

Resume

The student will take the Resume Critique, correct the mistakes, add to, and polish the Resume based on the critique results. The student will then submit a final version of his/her resume. (MLO: B, F)

Evangelism Reflection Paper

The student, during the internship, will have opportunities to witness Christ one-on-one to the unsaved. The student must give a basic overview in 1–2 pages of these opportunities and the program/methods used. (MLO: A, C, D, E)

End of Internship Reflection Paper

The student will give an evaluation of his/her experience and service during the internship. This paper must be 3–5 pages. (MLO: A, B, D, E)

Supervisor’s Final Evaluation

The supervising pastor will prepare an End of Internship Evaluation on the student’s progress and ministry performance and then submit it at the end of the course. Evaluation forms are provided in the course. (MLO: F)
