Course Description

This course requires the student to research the basic contours of their chosen policy cognate. Students will work with their faculty members to understand the scope, history, controversial issues, and key policy outcomes associated with this cognate. This will research will serve as a stepping stone to conducting a comprehensive literature review for their dissertation, and provide the needed context to ensure that the student’s chosen dissertation topic is focused and appropriate.

Rationale

PLCY 704 introduced students to the historical context of economic policy decisions and the policy impacts of economic decisions. PLCY 870 course builds on that and helps prepare students for a deeper review of economic policy, including the theoretical foundations for economic policy. Again, this will occur in a broader historical context, so that as students begin to develop a research emphasis for their dissertation, they will have the proper context for doing so.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Explain the different theories of economics.
  2. Identify root causes of current economic policy problems.
  3. Synthesize the latest research in the economic policy area with a Biblical approach to statesmanship.
  4. Develop meaningful research questions in light of the above.

Discussions: Threads and Replies (2)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided promptly for each Discussion. Each thread must be 700-750 words and incorporate ideas and citations from all of the Learn Items for the assigned Module: Week in addition to two scholarly sources. In addition to the thread, the student must reply to at least 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 250-300 words and include citations from the required reading and presentations and at least two scholarly sources. Each thread and reply must follow the current Turabian format.

Essay Assignments (8)

These essay assignments require students to answer questions about the Read items while also citing the Read items and 3-5 additional scholarly sources. Each essay assignment must be 4-5 pages of content and double-spaced.

Short Research Paper Assignments (3)

Students conduct significant research and discussion on possible dissertation topics related to economic theory and policy. Each paper must be 5-7 pages of content, double-spaced, and must include citations from relevant readings, presentations, and an additional 10-15 scholarly sources.

Final Research Paper Assignment

Students will conduct a final 10-12 page paper analyzing their final, chosen research paper topic. This may be a derivative of one of the 3 topics from one of the three short research papers, or it may be a modified topic. The paper must cite 25 scholarly sources and require reading and presentations.
