Course Description

The value of quantitative research in understanding human behavior is examined with an emphasis on various advanced quantitative methodologies and their theoretical foundations. The course builds on students’ understanding of basic inferential theory and linear regression and familiarizes them with new statistical techniques and advanced quantitative methods.

The purpose of this course is to develop an advanced understanding of the major concepts, applications, methodologies, and practices in quantitative research. This course will take on a more applied approach addressing empirical findings of contemporary issues in psychology to move students toward a dissertation topic and proposed research strategy. The course will also help students develop the skills necessary to understand and critique research in the field of psychology as well as propose innovative research ideas.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand and apply advanced concepts of probability, statistics, and power.
  2. Understand and create methods and analyses to answer specific research questions.
  3. Analyze and interpret data through excel and SPSS.
  4. Communicate the results of data analysis in appropriate APA format.
  5. Design psychological research and propose the appropriate analyses.
  6. Discuss a biblical worldview as it relates to the critical issues about advanced research in psychology.

Discussions (3)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a discussion thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each discussion thread must respond and fully address the prompt, demonstrate course-related knowledge, and include at least the required scholarly sources, not including the course text and/or Bible. In addition to the discussion thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ discussion threads. Each discussion reply must be at least 300 words and must provide a critical analysis and substantive feedback.

Discussion: Review and analysis of three short readings on SSRIs and depression.  The focus of the response will be on the research methods, analysis, and appropriateness of the conclusions. (MLOs: A–F)

Discussion: A specific aims page (one-page research proposal) should include the following: a summary of background and significance, the population of interest, a problem statement, research rationale, research question, aims/goals hypotheses, IV and DV, and tentative outcome and its value.  The student will also submit a 3-5 minute video presenting the idea. CITI Human Subjects Training Quiz

Students are required to complete the CITI course in Social-Behavioral-Educational (SBE) Basic. The SBE Basic course provides an introduction to social-behavioral-educational research with a focus on the protection of human subjects. It offers historic and current information on regulatory and ethical issues important to the conduct of research involving human subjects. Case studies are used within the modules to present key concepts. This course has been updated to reflect the 2018 Requirements of the Common Rule.  The student will be required to upload a certificate and scoring sheet.  Points will be assigned as 0.85 x CITI Score (out of 100 points).  A CITI score of 93 would equal 0.85 x 93 = 79/85.

Project Proposal Development Worksheet Assignment

Students will complete a worksheet to help understand how research is funded and how to align research with the strategic priorities of an organization.  Students will also work through ideas from the public health benefit of the research to understand potential challenges and barriers.

Research Methods SPSS Analysis Assignments (2)

There are many different research methods and statistical analyses available to address specific hypotheses.  SPSS analysis will include entering data related to the student’s research question and more specifically the IV and DV that will approximate what the student is likely to find if the study were to be carried out (e.g., mean differences, variability, and sample size). That is, the student will have to create an SPSS data file with fictitious data and use three different analyses along.  Submission will include a brief write-up to include an abstract, SPSS output, and graphs.

1. Specific Aims Page, Outline, and Reference Page Assignment (from Discussion 2)

The student will submit a specific aims page, an outline, and a reference page in the current APA format that supports the research proposal.

2. Final Research Paper Assignment

The student will write a 12–14-page research paper in the current APA format discussing and evaluating the current research in the field of false memories. The paper must have a reference page of at least 20 peer-reviewed journal articles.
