Course Description

Working in or with organizations requires an in-depth understanding of job attitudes. This class will approach the measurement and assessment of workplace attitudes from both a research and practical perspective. This course will review the major theories of job attitudes, as well as their antecedents, correlates, and consequences. Students will review research on attitudes such as job satisfaction, organizational commitment, engagement, and both organizational & counterproductive behaviors. They will then use this research to create their own applied attitude survey research project.

Rationale

This course is designed to expose students to research and scholarship in the areas of workplace attitudes, measurement, and change. This is an optional I/O concentration course that allows students to be familiar with both research and application related to workplace attitudes, measurement, and change.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand the major concepts, theories, methodologies, and empirical findings in workplace attitudes, measurement, and change.
  2. Assess the methods, designs, and statistical procedures of research applied to workplace attitudes, measurement, and change.
  3. Evaluate research in workplace attitudes, measurement, and change in the context of biblical thought.
  4. Apply workplace attitudes, measurement, and change research to practical problems in organizations.
  5. Produce a research project on workplace attitudes, measurement, and change.

Discussion: Overview Questions

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each Discussion. The purpose of this Discussion is to solidify the student’s learning of the concepts covered throughout the week’s reading and to integrate his/her Christian Worldview with this newly acquired knowledge. Each question should be at least 100 words for a total of 900 words for the entire Discussion. If The student can’t quite make it to 100 words for one answer just make sure that the overall Discussion is 900 words. One scholarly and one biblical reference should be included in the responses along with a list of references. Reply to at least two classmates, a minimum of 150 words for each reply, providing insight or questions generated from a classmate’s initial post.

Discussion: Literature Critiques (4)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each Discussion. The purpose of these Literature Critique Discussions is to further develop the student’s ability to critically evaluate and summarize peer-reviewed journal articles. Each article summary should be about 150 to 250 words. Conclusions should provide a clear integration of what the articles together say about the research area being discussed. A reference section must be included at the end of the post, formatted according to current APA guidelines. Reply to at least two classmates, providing a critique or questions generated from a classmate’s initial post.

Discussion: Comprehensive Literature Review

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each Discussion. The purpose of this Discussion is to further develop the student’s ability to critically evaluate and summarize peer-reviewed journal articles. Each article summary should be about 150 – 250 words. Conclusions should provide a clear integration of what the articles together say about the research area being discussed. Mini Research Proposal Outline Assignments

Using the scholarly journal articles found for the module topic, the student must prepare a Mini Research Proposal Outline. Note that the student will use one of these Mini Research Proposal Outline Assignments created throughout the course to complete the Literature Review Paper Assignment due in Module 8. When beginning the Mini Research Proposal Outline Assignment, the student must read at least 5 articles on the work attitude from the module, create Research Question/Hypothesis based on these articles, then write the rest of the Mini Research Proposal Assignment. Include a minimum of 5 references directly related to the work attitude in the Mini Research Proposal Outline Assignment. Each Mini Research Proposal Outline Assignment should be a minimum of three pages long, excluding the Title Page and References Page.

Employee Work Attitudes Assignments (2)

Part One For this Employee Work Attitudes Assignment, the student will identify a work or job attitude discussed in class to focus upon. Find a dissertation completed within the last 5 years on the selected work or job attitude (6 – 8 pages).

Part Two The student will research an organization, develop a data collection plan, and propose an organizational intervention (6 to 8 pages).

Submit the above in a written report using APA 7th Edition formatting for a student paper including headings and subheadings when appropriate. Each section should contain appropriate in-text citations to support assertations, statements, and any assumptions made. The written report should include a title and reference page which will not be included in the page counts. Each submission should be a minimum of 6 to 8 pages with no less than 8 references. Be sure to review the Employee Work Attitudes Grading Rubric for this assignment.

Literature Review Paper Assignment

The purpose of the Literature Review Paper Assignment is to explore one work attitude addressed in this course in greater detail, to demonstrate the ability to think critically, to integrate materials from a variety of sources, and to write clearly about theoretical and/or practical issues. Accordingly, this Literature Review Paper Assignment should be not less than 10 pages and not more than 13 pages. Page count does not include the title or reference pages. While there are no minimum reference requirements, at a minimum it is expected there are two full pages of properly formatted references.
