Course Description

An in-depth look at individual spiritual growth, development, and spiritual formation through private worship and the pursuit of Biblical spirituality. Particular application is made to the connection between a personal worship life and public worship leadership.

Rationale

The spiritual formation and growth of those leading worship has a direct influence on the worship life and spiritual vitality of local congregations. In fact, the songs a church sings impact and shape the congregation’s corporate theology and passion for worship. This course is designed as an in‑depth exploration of the processes and goals of spiritual formation in the life of the worship pastor. Specific focus is given to developing an intimate relationship with God and a Christ‑like character. In addition, the student will examine strategies for facilitating spiritual renewal and consistent discipleship in others.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Articulate the theological basis for spiritual formation in the life of the worship pastor.
  2. Identify critical individual leadership skills, personality characteristics, and spiritual gifts.
  3. Develop a pragmatic and comprehensive growth strategy for ongoing spiritual formation.
  4. Discuss the correlation between the spiritual growth of the worship pastor and that of the congregation.
  5. Develop a strategy for teaching spiritual formation to worship leaders in local church settings.

Course Assignment

Textbook readings and lecture presentations

Students are required to watch all course video presentations and read all portions of textbooks specified in the course calendar.

After reading the Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

PLACE Assessment Assignment

The student will complete the PLACE Assessment. The 1-page summary report from PLACE (PDF) will be submitted to the instructor along with a min. 4-page report in current Turabian format analyzing his or her results (MLO: B).

Discussions (4)

Students will engage in 4 discussions, following prompts related to the course presentations and textbooks. Each thread must be at least 250 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 150 words. Since these discussions are reflective in nature, no citations are required (MLO: A, B, C, D).

Self-evaluation/Discipleship Project Assignments (4)

Students will attend 4 synchronous learning experiences on Microsoft Teams, after each of which, they will complete a reflective assignment. Two self-evaluation projects (one paper and one video) and two discipleship projects (one paper and one video) will comprise the set of assignments. Detailed assignment instructions are found in the course guides module (MLO: A, B, C, D, E).

4MAT Book Review Assignment

The student will complete a 4MAT Book Review for the text Gentle and Lowly, by Dane Ortlund. (MLO: A,B,C).

Annotated Bibliography Assignment

In preparation for the research paper, the student will complete a bibliography of min. 20 scholarly sources (min. 10 books, min. 4 articles, min. 1 thesis or dissertation) related to the paper topic. An annotation of at least 50 words will follow each Turabian-formatted bibliographic entry (MLO: A,C).

Research Paper Assignment

The student will write a 12-15-page research paper on a topic related to the field of spiritual formation. All paper topics must be approved by the instructor (MLO: A,B,C,D).
