Course Description
This course will examine in depth the causes, symptoms, and treatments of both trauma-related and “normal” relations to exceptional violence, taking into account the latest research in the field and examining the affective, behavioral, cognitive, and spiritual challenges faced by survivors. Included, among others, will be community, military, and church-based responses to such events as crime, school and workplace violence, domestic violence, motor vehicle accidents, and sexual assault.

Rationale
It is undeniable that today’s society is saturated with violence. The average child will witness over 200,000 acts of violence on TV by the time he or she turns 18. Around 35% of the women and 22% of the men who arrive at hospital emergency rooms are there due to domestic violence. While some who experience the trauma of this type are able to adequately cope, many are not. Counselors and community workers need to be aware of the effects of trauma on individuals and the ways in which these effects may be treated; this course is intended to address that need.
Measurable Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the nature of various types of trauma and the effects on the body, mind, emotions, and spiritual dimensions of the individual.
- Compare and contrast various types of treatment for crises and trauma.
- Examine, discuss, and integrate all issues, theories, assumptions, materials, etc. presented in the course in accordance with current scholarly standards and practices.
- Examine, discuss, and integrate all issues, theories, assumptions, materials, etc. presented in the course through the lens of Scripture.
- Analyze and apply the components of comprehensive trauma assessment considering the differential impact trauma has on individuals, families, groups, and communities.

Article Review
The student is required to select a scholarly article that discusses the integration of spirituality and trauma. The student will read the selected article and provide a summary and critique of the article consisting of 2-3 pages of content in the current APA format. (MLOs: A, C, D, E)
Research Paper Assignments
Research Paper: Assessment Assignment: This section will include a title page, a references page with at least 2 sources, and 1.5–2 pages covering an overview of crisis assessment.
Research Paper: Overview of Specific Crises Assignment: This section will include a title page, a references page with at least 3 sources, and 1.5–2 pages presenting 2–3 types of crises.
Research Paper: Treatment and Intervention for Crises Assignment: This section will include a title page, a references page with at least 2 sources, and 1.5–2 pages presenting 2–3 interventions to use with clients in trauma.
Research Paper: Final Assignment: For this Final Research Paper assignment, the student will compile Parts I–III into one document, including a title page, introduction, Parts I–III, biblical integration, conclusion, and references page. This paper should be 5–7 pages of content, not including the title page and references page. This assignment should include at least 5 sources. (MLOs: A, B, C, D, E)
Case Presentation Assignment
The student will select a case presentation from the Cavaiola and Colford (2018) text and apply 2 to 3 assessments and 2 to 3 interventions found within the James and Gilliland (2017) text. The student will also integrate a Christian worldview into this assignment. This assignment will consist of 4–5 pages of content, not including the title page and the references page, and will include a minimum of 2 sources (both course texts). (MLOs: A, B, C, D, E)
Quizzes (8)
Quizzes cover the assigned reading in the James and Gilliland (2017) text. Each quiz will contain 20 multiple-choice and true/false questions and will have a 1-hour time limit. (MLOs: A, B)
