Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive understanding of parenting and generational patterns and their impact on family health and well-being. Lifestyle and cultural barriers to effective parenting are examined, as well as proactive parenting strategies, effective discipline, and healthy communication within the family. Ethical concerns and multicultural factors are also considered.

Families often reproduce themselves, and many parents are unaware of the powerful influence they have on their children. Legacy is not a word they often think about. In fact, many parents live in self-doubt when it comes to having a positive influence. The principles taught in this course will provide students with a foundational perspective and the necessary tools for helping parents learn to discipline well, engage a multigenerational approach to parents, develop a healthy spirituality in their children and leave a legacy for generations to come. This course is offered in an eight-week format and includes extensive readings, interactions with family members, a position paper, and interactions with other students via Discussions.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify lifestyle and cultural barriers to effective parenting.
  2.  Develop proactive parenting strategies for effective discipline and child-rearing.
  3. Describe the multigenerational influences on a family’s overall functioning.
  4. Identify how culture influences multigenerational family communication patterns.
  5. Identify and discuss destructive and constructive communication styles that affect each family member across generations.
  6. Define goals, dreams, and missions for his or her family legacy.

Discussions (4)

Discussions simulate classroom interaction for students in the online environment and provide students with opportunities to discuss course information in an informal manner. There are 4 Discussions in this course comprised of an initial thread, with a minimum of two replies.

Specific Instructions


  • For each Discussion, you will post a thread of at least 300 words on the topic presented.
  • Your thread must reveal an in-depth exploration of the question in a comprehensive answer reflecting specific concepts and principles. In addition, the thread needs to include, cited in the current APA edition, either course materials and /or Scripture references to support your points. Refer to the Discussion Grading Rubric for grading details.


  • Reply to the threads of a minimum of two (2) classmates, using at least 150 words for each reply; this is the minimum expectation.
  • Each reply post must address the related thread directly and must be a unique contribution to the discussion, reflecting a thoughtful analysis of the topic and thread. Citations are required for full credit in replies as well. Please refer to the Discussion Grading Rubric for grading details. (MLO’s A, B, C, D, E, F)

Book Review Assignments (2)

The Book Review Assignment is a way of responding to readings that requires the learner to interact with new ideas on several levels, including a Summary, Concrete Responses, a Reflection, and personal Application. The student will write two book reviews using the 4MAT structure on a course textbook: The New Dare to Discipline and Parenting Isn’t For Cowards. (MLOs A, B, C, D, E, F)

Research Paper Assignments (3)

The student will build a 2,000-2,500-word research paper throughout the course of the term, in the current APA format. Over the duration of the course, the student will select a topic; create a title page and outline of the paper; and, finally, submit his or her final research paper.

Quiz: Research Paper Topic

The student will choose a specific topic related to effective parenting to write about for the research paper. The student must submit his or her topic selection for instructor approval via a quiz assignment. If the topic does not receive instructor approval, it will not be eligible for use in the research paper.

Topics can include but are not limited to:

  • Parenting strong-willed adolescents
  • Research-based discipline strategies
  • Discipline in multi-generational homes
  • Raising kids in a multi-ethnic home
  • Discipline and child temperament
  • Parenting styles and child outcomes
  • Parenting children with ADHD or ODD
  • Discipline / best parenting practices in stepfamilies
  • (Other topics can be chosen at the professor’s discretion)

Research Paper: Title Page, Outline, and References Assignment

The student will create a title page, outline, and references assignment in the current APA format with 3 references. The outline must be 60–100 words and include at least 3 references the student plans to use. The references must be listed in a reference section in the current APA format. The outline must include the Level 1, Level 2, and, if necessary, Level 3 headings the student will use in setting up his or her Research Paper.

Research Paper: Final Assignment

The student will write a 2,000-2,500-word paper in the current APA format on the approved research topic related to effective parenting with at least 8 references from sources within 10 years. (MLOs A, B, C, D, E, F)
