This statement about Jesus’s human development encompasses the domains examined in this course: cognitive, physical, social/emotional, and spiritual. An understanding of child development is essential for developmentally appropriate practice in the classroom.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

A. Differentiate the characteristics and developmental needs of children in all age ranges in the domains of physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual growth as well as gross and fine motor skills.

B. Analyze the multiple interacting influences on a child’s development (biological and environmental) and the interconnectedness of developmental domains and environmental factors.

C. Identify the expected developmental milestones for the physical domain for one age range to include gross and fine motor skills, brain development, nutritional needs, physical activity,y, and sleep.

D. Assess the developmental skills in the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social domains of specific children at different development levels.

E. Apply appropriate instructional practices that will enhance physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual growth as they relate to the developmental levels of the children in the classroom.

F. Summarize spiritual development expectations and ways to foster the spiritual growth of children in a chosen age range.

G. Discover how God’s Word speaks to growth and development in the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional domains.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided promptly for each forum. Each thread must be 400 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 250 words. Journal Article Reviews (2)

Each candidate will access a journal article related to the topic for the week and aligned with the age group he/she already teaches or desires to teach. A summary of the article will be given along with an integration of concepts gleaned from the assigned textbook reading. The paper will conclude with ideas related to how the information would affect classroom instruction. (MLO: A, B, D, E, F)

Parent Education PowerPoint Presentation

Each candidate will create a PowerPoint presentation that could be used for a Parent Education session. The topic of the presentation will be Physical Development and Nutrition Needs. The presentation will feature the age group currently teaching or planning to teach. (MLO: A, C)

Developmental Case Study

The candidate will identify 2 students in different levels of development (preschool, elementary, or middle school). The candidate will obtain permission to observe each student and make note of characteristics observed in at least 3 developmental domains (physical, cognitive, social/emotional). (MLO: A, B, C, D, E, G)
