From healthcare agencies, social service agencies, philanthropic foundations, and religious institutions to museums, universities, and professional associations, the nonprofit sector includes a diverse array of organizations, all chartered with a particular public or collective purpose.
In the last 30 years, the importance of nonprofit agency in the development and delivery of public services has grown dramatically. This course introduces the nonprofit organizational forms and examines the complex social, political, legal, and economic environments in which nonprofits operate; the various roles they play on local, national, and international levels; and the structures, processes, and complexities of organizational governance shared by volunteer and professional staff decision-makers.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Discuss acquisition and management of organizational resources.
- Analyze the human aspects of maintaining a successful organization.
- Recognize the scope and limits to the activities of public health organizations.
- Develop systems for continual quality improvement of public health programming.
- Manage traditional and social media for the furtherance of a public health agency.
- Develop the framework for creating a 501(c) (3).

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. The student will use each thread to create the elements of the Mock Proposal assignment that will be submitted at the end of the term. Each thread must be at least 600 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 300 words. For each thread, the student must support his/her assertions with at least 2 scholarly or biblical resources in current AMA format. Each reply must incorporate at least 1 scholarly or biblical resource as well. The last discussion is part of the Service Learning Experience Project Assignment.
Case Study Bullet Analysis Assignments
The student will complete two unique Case Study Bullet Analysis for this course, which will be a critical analysis of a real-life nonprofit organization using the concepts learned during the course regarding nonprofit development and management.
Mock Proposal Assignments
Using the Mock Proposal Template, the student will develop a business plan as if he/she were starting his/her own nonprofit organization.
Risk Assessment Assignment
As part of the Mock Proposal Assignment, the student will complete a Risk Assessment, identifying and describing at least 10 specific risks for his/her hypothetical nonprofit organization.
The student will write a multi-section research-based proposal in current AMA format in which he/she will complete a business plan for creating a hypothetical nonprofit organization. The student will use material developed in the Discussions and the Risk Assessment form to complete the sections of the Mock Proposal Template. The Final Submission must include at least 10 scholarly references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible.
Service Learning Experience Project Assignments
The student will engage in a service project that includes community engagement and team collaboration, a minimum of 8 hours of service, and includes a public health deliverable. The project will be assessed using a reflection assignment and a video presentation.
The student will identify a need in his/her local community and complete no less than 8 hours of public, community, or civic service within a setting that supports the ability to contribute public health insights within a setting outside of his/her current field of study. Examples include clinics, hospitals, community centers, non-profit agencies, businesses, or government agencies/buildings not associated with public health.
The student will complete a professional reflection assignment answering 4 specific questions evaluating the competencies of team collaboration with their outcomes. Each reflective question reply must be no less than 150 words. Insights should be connected to the competencies identified in the student’s weekly readings and presentations and cited in AMA format.
Discussion: Service Learning Experience Project: Video Presentation
The student will apply public health competencies, as well as resources and readings from the term to his/her collaborative service experience assignment and answer the question “What makes a good Collaborative Service Member in Public Health?” The video presentation will be uploaded to a Discussion: Service Learning Experience Video and Discussion (Module 8) providing a further collaborative learning experience among the students. Each video is required to be 5–8 minutes. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 300 words.
