Course Description
This course is designed to prepare students to preach expository sermons from the book of Romans. Special attention will be given to theological themes that arise from the text, to include: salvation, sanctification, suffering/death and hope, God’s plan and purpose, and Christian liberty. This course is available as an intensive, in residence, and online.

Rationale
This course is designed to advance students’ development and delivery of expository sermons from the book of Romans. Students will be challenged to utilize proper homiletical tools for developing sermon manuscripts. Further, the course is focused on preparing students to move listeners to actions of faith and practice.
Measurable Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Evaluate the book of Romans both exegetically and homiletically.
- Analyze the major themes and theology of the book of Romans.
- Discern theological principles and provide biblical insights from the book of Romans.
- Evaluate the application of specific themes of the book of Romans to modern recipients.
- Develop and persuasively preach five expository sermons for modern listeners.
- Create a plan to preach a series on the entire book of Romans, including detailed sermon titles, themes, and purpose.

Discussions (2)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to watch 1 video sermon uploaded by a fellow student and post a critique/evaluation. The critique/evaluation must be at least 300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge and constructive assistance to the student preacher. (MLOs: D, E)
Theological Foundations of Preaching Reflection Paper Assignment
The student will write a 5-page reflection paper in current Turabian format that focuses on the Theological Foundations of Preaching from chapter 3 of John Stott’s book, Between Two Worlds. (MLOs: C, E)
Expository Sermon Outline Assignments (3)
The student will develop three (3) 12–15-minute sermons and submit a detailed outline for each. The student will choose an appropriate passage from Romans to develop 3 sermons on the following themes: Salvation, Sanctification, and Christian liberty. The student must choose a different passage for each sermon. (MLOs: A, B, E, F)
Sermon Videos Assignments (2)
The student will preach his/her salvation message and Christian liberty message from the book of Romans on video before a live audience. Sermon delivery must be without a pulpit, podium, or any barrier between the preacher and the audience. Each sermon must be delivered in 12–15 minutes. (MLOs: C, D, E)
Sermon Outline and Manuscript Assignment
The student will develop a 12–15-minute Christian liberty sermon from the book of Romans based on the outline previously submitted. The message will include a 3-D visual illustration accentuating the big idea of the text. The student is required to submit a full manuscript and outline for the sermon. The manuscript must follow current Turabian format. (MLOs: A, B, C, D, E, F)
Analytical Book Review Assignment
The student will complete an analytical book review of Between Two Worlds by John Stott. The review must be at least 5 pages and must summarize the book (1 page) and then analyze (4 pages) the underlying biblical and theological truths and their implications for preaching in military settings. (MLOs: C, E)
Preaching Plan Assignment
The student will create a plan to preach a series through the book of Romans, including detailed sermon titles, themes, and purposes. (MLOs: A, B, C, D, E, F)
