Course Description

This is a foundational course in the profession of TESL emphasizing proficiency in planning, instruction, and curriculum and design, and exposure to educational challenges particular to TESL.

Rationale

This course provides an overview of instructional design in the field of TESL and teaching world languages. It exposes emerging teaching professionals to the responsibility they have in the organization and design of instruction, planning for classroom management through positive instructional preparation, researching for available resources for implementing instruction, and providing differentiated instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Create effective learning objectives for appropriate instructional level(s).
  2. Create and demonstrate effective planning for instruction and classroom management.
  3. Develop and design curriculum and instruction for diverse settings.
  4. Discuss and articulate educational challenges in the ESL classroom.
  5. Integrate best practices in planning, instruction, curriculum, and design within a Christian worldview framework.

Course Assignment

 

 

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

 

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 500 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to at least 2 classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 250 words.

 

The student will develop 3 effective lesson plans on a variety of topics to teach in an ESL or world language class. Each lesson plan must contain a Title page and a Reference page in the current APA format.

 

The student will develop a presentation, using PowerPoint or equivalent presentation software, articulating an educational challenge topic in relation to the ESL or world language classroom. The presentation must contain at least 7–8 slides, and utilize the course textbook and at least 3–5 other sources. All sources must be cited using the current APA format.

 

The student will create a cumulative project which will demonstrate effective planning, objectives, curriculum choice, and instructional design as related to an ESL or world language classroom. The project must contain a Title page and a Reference page in the current APA format.

 

Each quiz will cover the textbook material for the assigned Module: Week. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 true/false questions, and have a 30-minute time limit.

 

The Quiz: Final Exam will cover the textbook material from both assigned texts. The exam will be open-book/open-notes, contain 25 true/false questions, and have a 1-hour time limit.
