Course Description

This course discusses the political challenges to developing national security capabilities against the threat of terrorism. Examines what military and intelligence organizational changes are needed to combat the continual threat of terrorism to US citizens, and the roles of the FBI, DHS, and DoD in protecting citizens. Considers the challenges of protecting our critical infrastructure from terrorist threats, ranging from the lone wolf to large scale terrorist operations.

Rationale

The purpose of this course is to examine the relationship between National Security and Terrorism. Terrorism and national security are directly intertwined. National security policy and implementation are critical to preventing and stopping terrorism both at home and abroad.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Formulate a comprehensive and holistic national security strategy against terrorists’ threats.
  2. Explain the military’s role and options for confronting terrorism.
  3. Discuss how intelligence can and should be used in the fight against terrorism.
  4. Develop mitigation strategies to protect our critical infrastructure from terrorists’ attacks.
  5. Describe the proper role homeland security stakeholders (DHS, FBI, CIA, INTs, DOD, state and local law enforcement, etc…) should take to stop terrorist attacks.
  6. Discuss biblical principles and scriptures that support and instruct regarding the national defense of one’s country.

The student will complete a Research Paper which will be a Comprehensive Examination of Legal and Policy Implications involving Terrorism and National Security. The student will write at minimum a 5-7-full page research-oriented paper in current APA format. The paper must include at least 7 sources (which will include the class textbooks). The paper will be submitted through Turnitin.

Research Paper: Operational & Strategic Issues Assignment

The student will complete a Research Paper which will be a Comprehensive Examination of Operational and Strategic Issues involving Terrorism and National Security. The student will write at minimum a 5-7-full page research-oriented paper in current APA format. The paper must include at least 7 sources (which can include the class textbooks). The paper will be submitted through Turnitin.

Combating Terrorism Using National Security Presentation Assignment

The student will prepare a PowerPoint (Audio/Visual) presentation wherein he or she will provide a briefing on his or her comprehensive strategy/plan for combating Terrorism Using National Security – Law/Policy, Stakeholders, Techniques, & Strategies. The student will combine the work completed in the two research papers to formulate the plan. The presentation must be 10 slides with no more than 250 words per slide in the notes section in addition to their bullet points. The PowerPoint will not exceed 20 minutes in length. The student will first need to briefly identify which terrorist group by name.
