This course will explain the inter-relationships between sport and religion while examining the impact of muscular Christianity and sport ministry in North America. Tools and guidelines for preparing, organizing, and administering a sports ministry program will also be examined.

Rationale
Sport and religion have been connected for thousands of years. At various times, sports have been used and have been used by different religions. Sport provides today’s Christian with a platform for ministry in a relevant and non-threatening manner. This happens at the international and local levels. Those who wish to minister in a postmodern culture must realize that sport is one of the most effective means of outreach that the Christian possesses. The successful sport minister will understand the background of sport and religion and the skills necessary for utilizing sport as a ministry tool.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Analyze the relationship between sport and religion from a historical perspective.
- Evaluate the impact of the muscular Christianity movement in Western culture.
- Describe the various organizations that currently utilize sports for evangelism and discipleship purposes.
- Explain the legal issues that are pertinent to religious and sports activity.
- Identify the qualifications necessary for effective sports ministers.
- Explain the basic function of a sports ministry.
- Design a plan to manage events, facilities, and programs within the context of a sports ministry.

Discussions (3)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore the student will complete 3 Discussions in this course. For each discussion, the student will post 1 thread of at least 300 words. The student must then post 3 replies of at least 100 words each. For each thread, students must support their assertions with examples and thoughtful analysis using at least 1 textbook citation, at least 1 scholarly source, and at least 1 Scripture reference all in the current APA format. Any sources cited must have been published within the last 5 years.
Sport Outreach Organization Review & Journal Article Review (2)
The student will write a 2-3 page research-based paper in the current APA format that focuses on the assigned topic. Each paper must include at least 2 scholarly sources in addition to the assigned readings and Bible references.
Strategic Foundations Research Paper
The student will research the strategic foundation for a sports ministry. The paper must be 3–5 pages, contain a minimum of 2 sources in addition to the Bible, and conform to current APA standards.
Portfolio
The student will provide a description of the administration, logistics, and planning for a sport ministry project of the student’s choice. The portfolio must be 5-7 pages, contain at least 4 scholarly sources, and conform to current APA standards.
Quizzes (8)
Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the Module: Week in which it is assigned. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 15 multiple-choice and true/false questions, and have a 15-minute time limit except for Quiz: Biblical Foundations which has a 20-minute time limit.
