This course is designed to introduce students to the theoretical perspectives, values, and skills associated with contemporary international social work. Social, political, cultural, economic, organizational, religious, and technological advances that affect societal dynamics in various regions of the world will be explored.

The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to practice and policy aspects of global social work. Biological, psychological, social, and spiritual factors will be considered from a strengths perspective as they relate to global social work.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

    1. Recognize the extent to which a culture’s structures and values may oppress, marginalize, alienate, or create or enhance privilege and power. (CSWE, Competency 3).
    2. Discuss self-awareness to eliminate the influence of personal biases and values in working with diverse groups. (CSWE, Competency 3).
    3. Discuss his/her understanding of the importance of difference in shaping life experiences. (CSWE, Competency 1)
    4. Understand the forms and mechanisms of oppression and discrimination. (CSWE, Competency 3).
    5. Use conceptual frameworks to guide the processes of assessment, intervention, and evaluation. (CSWE Competency 7).
    6. Appraise changing locales, populations, scientific and technological developments, and emerging societal trends to provide relevant services. (CSWE, Competency 9).
    7. Explain the importance of providing leadership in promoting sustainable changes in service delivery and practice to improve the quality of social services. (CSWE, Competency 1).

Discussions (3)

The student will complete three Discussions in this course. The student will post one thread of at least 350 words and then post two replies of at least 200 words. For each thread, students must support their assertions with at least one scholarly citation in APA format as well as one citation from the Healy & Link (2012) textbook. Each reply must incorporate at least one scholarly citation(s) in APA format. Any sources cited must have been published within the last five years. Acceptable sources include textbooks, the Bible, and other scholarly sources.

Theory and Concept Paper Assignment

The student will select a major theory of choice (e.g., human development, behavioral therapy, feminist theory, and systems theory) pertinent to social work practice. The student will analyze this theory concerning its utility to global social work practice, and write a 2–3-page paper giving at least two examples in detail.

Book Review Assignment

After reading the Smrcek text, the student will complete a 2–3-page Book Review in the current APA format. The review must contain at least 5 references to the book as well as the course textbook including Bible (provide biblical and contemporary examples).

PowerPoint Presentation Assignment

For this assignment, the student will create a narrated PowerPoint presentation of 10–15 slides that focuses on a special topic related to international social work. The presentation must include at least 4 references to the course textbook, scholarly journal articles, and/or the Bible. References must be in the current APA format.

Disaster Plan Assignment

The student will locate and review the disaster response plan for their community, school, or hometown in the event of terrorism, armed conflict, pandemic, etc. The student will then write a 2–3-page, APA format, response paper outlining the disaster plan and how social work plays a role in the plan. Social Work core values as well as the use of scripture are to be integrated into the analysis.
